Sorry if this has already been asked

A HK teacher just told me you need a PGCE (or PGDE) to get on the NET Scheme.

Is this true, as i can't recall reading this anywhere?

I have BSc, CELTA + a bit of experience.

Along with every other answer regarding the NET recruitment process, it seems to be different for every case.

Send in the application. If you don't pass, they won't tell you why. If you do pass the initial selection process, then you are a long way of the way there.

Whilst they say they want this, that and everything else, it is evident that when it comes to the interview all of this goes straight out of the window.

There is no uniform requirement, despite what they say on the website.

Of course though, it would help to have as much as possible under your belt. It always does.

While I can't be 100% sure, from what I've gathered over the years, very few secondary NETs are recruited without having QTS (qualified teacher status), however, a fair percentage of primary NETs are recruited without professional teacher quals.

Worth mentioning perhaps that if you don't have QTS you will remain at the bottom of the salary scale, though with the special allowance the total salary is still quite good.

I agree with Joshua that the best way of finding out is to give it a go.

Which kind of candidate would the EdB more likely select?

Candidate A - BA in English + CELTA + 1 or 2 years experience

Candidate B - BA (any field) + CELTA + PGDE, but no experience.

Both would be long shots, IMO. However, if the PGDE was obtained in HK, that would be an advantage.

According to their website, you can be hired without a PGCE. You would be recognised as Category 4. It just means that you can't progress beyond pt. 20 on the payscale.

Category 1 (to be appointed at Assistant Primary School Master/Mistress (APSM) rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i) a bachelor�s degree in English (i.e. majoring in English Language or English Literature or English Studies or Linguistics# or a Modern Language#) from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;
(ii) a recognized teacher training qualification in primary education; and
(iii) a Teaching of English as a Foreign Language or a Second Language (TEFL/TESL) qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

Category 2 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i) a bachelor�s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;
(ii) a recognised teacher training qualification in primary education; and
(iii) a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

In the event that candidates meeting the requirements in Category 1 - 2 cannot be recruited, consideration may be given to appoint teachers with the following qualifications:

Category 3 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29)

(i) a bachelor�s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent;
(ii) a recognised teacher training qualification; and
(iii) a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

Category 4 (to be appointed at APSM rank, MPS pt. 15-29, with salary bar at MPS Point 20)

(i) a bachelor�s degree in any subject from a Hong Kong university or equivalent; and
(ii) a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

Category 5 (to be appointed at Certificated Master/Mistress (CM) rank, MPS pt. 14-24)

(i) a recognised teacher�s certificate obtained after at least 2 years� full-time study or equivalent; and
(ii) a TEFL/TESL qualification at least at certificate level, or an equivalent course of study recognised by EDB*.

Candidates who are considered for appointment but possess non-local qualifications need to have their qualifications assessed by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ) as to whether their qualifications are comparable to local bachelor�s degrees and local initial teacher training qualifications. The assessment results of the HKCAAVQ shall be final.[url][/url]

Someone I know with little experience, a random degree and a CELTA got hired.

Someone else I know with a CELTA, MA in TESOL and a progressing PGDE and about 10 years in Korea in uni and secondary schools, didn't get hired.

Whatever they say on their website is not what they hold fast to.....
