Hi, this is my first post. I've done just a little lurking here the past couple weeks, and I first want to give a giant thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to reply to me...!
To cut to the chase: I'm currently teaching SpEd English in the US, looking to teach abroad next year (and maybe thereafter). Fate seems to be funneling me to S Korea, which is fine by me (I taught Eng at a Chinese university about 15 years ago). The catch: I have a DWI from 2000. I've read various things about how that may or may not be a problem for Korea.
My question is, how might my DWI affect my employment prospects in OTHER countries? I'm not so terribly concerned about where I end up, but I have debts, so money is definitely an object. Thanks again!! |

In China it probably wouldn't be problem. On the surface, given the relatively low wages, China doesn't appear to be a great option. But for an industrious person, the money can be good. You take a low-hours main job and supplement it with lots of extra work. Make sure to get a contract that allows this. Your teaching background should be an asset in attracting private tutoring clients. |

It won't be a problem in Japan AFAIK. |

SpEd teacher in the States; IF you have state certification as a teacher then get out of EFL and look at international schools.
In Korea your DWI won't matter for an E7 but will make a visa impossible for an E2 (EFL teacher).
In Taiwan it will preclude legal work (with a proper visa) but leaves buxibans open as an option. (too bad since k-12 work pays well for certified teachers). Same with the NET program in HK.
Same with Thailand. International schools = hit and miss (some care, some don't). Wages vary from 50-130k baht/month. No money in EFL for your first year in the country (30-40k/mo).
In China it may be an issue depending on where you apply for your "Z" visa from. Applying in the US may not be possible but applying in HK won't matter. Money is variable from 3000-15000 rmb for a certified teacher. Shop around.
Money is certainly decent in the middle east but I have no specific information on visa restrictions and work conditions. You'll have to inquire on the ME forums.

A friend of a friend had a DUI and got an E2 visa here in kimchi land. He wrote an apology to immigration and promised not to drive. ta-da visa! |

Thanks to everyone for the replies!!
tttompatz - You sent me scurrying to Gogle to do a little more directed research there, which is of course great! I have a few follow-up questions for you.
Are international schools really such a better deal? I'm looking to get away from the American bureaucratic system of goals, objectives, blah blah, blah blah, but I don't want to be stupid. I'm not very familiar with what exactly we mean by "international schools." Do you have any good links or info?
Might an option for me then be to go to Taiwan on a tourist visa and work in a buxiban? And are you saying the NET program in HK wouldn't be available to me, even though China proper (probably) is?
naturegirl - That's really interesting! Did he write the letter after he'd been rejected once??
Thanks again!! |

There are lots of places to look for "international school" positions.
Some websites cost money, some are free.
Places to start your information search would be sites like:
http://www.ibo.org or
http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs/ .
Yes, the remuneration packages for international hires of qualified / certified / licensed teachers are usually about double what an ESL gets in the same country and usually come with benefits like airfare, housing, medical, ...

China has all sorts of people here; a teacher with a DWI is the least of anyone's worries. |

Thanks again! For the record, so far I've nibbled at a scammer, but just filled out an app for a placement agency for international schools, probably going to San Fran for a job fair in a few weeks, and hopefully get hired by one of them. Two year contracts... Sounds like the way to go. Right...?? |
