Hi, If I'm living on the Caribbean coast (Barranquilla or Cartagena), how difficult is it to take weekend trips (or longer) to other cities like Cali, Medellin, or Bogota? Is flying within Colombia fairly affordable?

All but the very best teaching jobs will preclude weekend trips to those cities from the coast. Perhaps you'd be able to do that kind of trip once or twice at most during a 12 month contract (making 2.5 million/month - once, making 3 million plus/month - twice). Flying within Colombia isn't cheap. Regular bus travel to those cities from the coast should be ruled out. Barranquilla to Bogota is a 20 hours bus trip on excruciating roads.

Having said all that, there are many weekend destinations on the coast that can be reached in less than 2 hours by bus so you won't hurt for weekend plans.

I consider myself really fortunate to be at the school I'm teaching at now. The administration is great and they take care of the teachers financially and beaurocratically. I am able to take flights within Colombia, and out of, whenever I feel like it. I'm actaully in Ecuador for the Carnaval Holiday as I write this and my ticket from Barranquilla was only $350 US. Getting to places like Argentina and Brazil are a lot more than that, though.

Glad to hear you're happy with the financial and administrative side of things at your school, Gregorio! As you know, there is an absolutely huge difference between getting hired from abroad to teach at an international school and coming down here to pound the pavement.

At some point it would be interesting to hear what the compensation packages are at your school. From what I've heard, 4.5 million/month, flights and a furnished apartment in one of the best parts of the city is typical of a foreign hire at a top international school in a major city of Colombia. Now if you're a 'local hire', you might get offered 1/4 of that.
