I am a Vietnames woman marrying an Americam man. We will marry in Vn this summer and try to go to some GCC country for him to teach by September. He will graduate in June with his MA in TESOL from a California University. But, I won't be a U.S. citizen, just married to an American. So, how easy (or difficult) will it be for me to get a visa -- for him it's easy, but what about me?

Thanks

It really depends on the relations that Vn has with the prospective country of hire. Once a certain country is settled upon, you should call that country's embassy in your country of that country's embassy that services your country. My wife is a national from a major Asian economic power, so she didn't have difficulties.

I wouldn't know how Vn would fit into the picture.

It's the way of the world!

I suggest that he post here for advice on getting a job - if he hasn't already. With a brand new MA, there may be issues getting a job that accepts it.

You'll have no problem.

I personally know of Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese, and even Iranian wives who have gotten visas.

One thing about the Gulf countries, despite all their other negatives, is that they are very pro family and don't prevent wives getting visas.

The one caveat is Saudi Arabia. If your husband is not on an "accompanied" contract, there may be some issues.

You'll find, in retrospect, they're very pro THEIR family...

It's an unspoken "their"!

The issue is that a wife cannot get a residence visa.

I've been on a couple of "unaccompanied" contracts in Saudi and they don't bring wives there. Sometimes it's because of housing conditions, but there may be other reasons.

Saudi Arabia's laws are different from the rest of the GCC because they are very strict about who goes in and out of their country. Your husband needs to get a contract that allows him to have married status instead of single status. Otherwise, you can't go with him. The other GCC countries do not have such restrictions. The other problem as VS stated is finding a job with a new MA but no experience. All GCC countries require a couple of years experience.

As I understand it in the UAE if you're employed in certain professions including teacher you have the right to sponsor your spouse's visa. A low paid worker does not have the right to sponsor spouse's or children's visas. Of course the better employers will also pay for a spouse's airfares, health insurance etc and offer appropriate accommodation.
