My email inbox is being flooded with job offers right now, and most of the job offers look bad. The salaries are the same, but the number of classes seems to be increasing to 20 or 25 a week.
Benefits seem to be decreasing in quality also.

I am happy at my school, and I am not looking for a job, but I do like to keep up with what is being offered, and the offers do not look good, IMHO.

It is a good problem to have, mate. In my native country, America, the economy is very poor compared to China.

Interesting. I have never known an American that uses the term "mate".

Are you suggesting that ALL Americans, EVERY American do not use the term "mate?" I have friends, mates, buddies, and buddies that use that term as well as a handful of other synonyms.

At least not in the sense that v2 uses it. Have you never 'mated'? Other than with the matrimonial or sexual definition, I have never heard an American use 'mate' to describe a person.

And it's "EVERY American does not..." not "EVERY American do not...". Got that, mate?

I have mated, although I prefer to describe that in crass terms.

My generalizing suggestion was more of a nudge toward the notion that v2 isn't American, nothing to hit caps lock about. Of course I don't speak for all Americans, amigo.

My email has been lousy with job offers lately, too. Bad ones. Maybe a lot of holiday runners?

It could be an American that hangs out with Australians/Brits too much. People do pick up slang from others.

Take that term I just used "hang out". It sounds American. I guess the Americanism has rubbed off on me. I should really use the term "spend time with."

Spend time with Irish and you'll soon be talking about going looking for "craic"

"Mate" is a very Aussie term, mate.

Canadians??? Well, can somebody tell me something here about Canadians that I don't know about?? You guys say "mate"?

Anyway, it doesn't matter, I like the Canucks. They are like the northern hemisphere version of us.

Oh, Jamie, mate, are you an Okker? or another fruit preaching your medical inefficacy to these boards. Mate, if you are a doctor, why aren't you practising in your country earning heaps of $$$$$, instead of being a lowly paid EFL teacher. I know what I would do. To me, it doesn't make sense. Your knowledge of "mate" used in US is something I am looking forward to from your fellow US posters on this board.

Actually, I've just realised I went further off topic to the original OP.

Mate, you will get those emails and that seems to be about the norm these days. To advance, you would have to have some guanxi with certain schools. Your next move should be via the "who knows who" network. Ask the teachers at your school about who knows of some interesting, well paid jobs around the place. You'd be surprised at what they come back to you with. Probe, Rog, probe. You'll get the response you hope for. Over and out.

I'm getting flooded too. The jobs offered don't seem any better or worse than in previous years, which I suppose means they're worse given cost of living increases. The "mate" thing got stale quickly. Canadians don't use that word in the context of friend, and we'd probably consider any Canadian who did to be pretentious.

I think I would view unsolicited offers much like offers from Silk Street or other "bargain" markets: they start with the ridiculous and hope for a bite. When the ridiculous offers are the only ones coming my way, after actively searching for work, I think I'd give China a pass.

But the original post is a good reminder to look beyond monthly salary and to total compensation versus total hours working or available. When they can't lower salary they lengthen work hours or cap the travel reimbursement or accommodation. You have to add everything up to compare properly.
