Is it possible to land full year contracts in September or is this a rarity because of the school year starting in April? Is this a possibility, and when would be an optimum time to start applying/looking for postings?
Thanks! |

Are you thinking in terms of teaching within the K-12 school system?
If you there are certainly some contracts which start around September, and there are always positions that open up when a replacement is necessary for whatever reason.
If you are thinking of language schools, then there are generally openings year around. |

Some international school years start in September so they would want to hire around that time.
There are contracts for ALT positions that start in September but they are to replace people who have been fired or quit. The contracts would end in February, March, or April.
Also, some cash-strapped cities (like Suita, Osaka) only have money to hire ALTs for half the year. Last year Suita JHS ALT positions were only from Sept-Mar. So there are some contracts that start late due to financial constraints and not because of firing/quitting. |

Fall openings may be for September or October. Figure 1-3 months in advance in order to apply, mostly because of visa paperwork and processing.
What are your qualifications, so that other posters can point you in the right direction? |

In schools (not eikaiwa language schools), typically only JET and international school contracts will run from autumn until summer.
Otherwise most other public school contracts follow the Japanese academic year (April-March). So normally if you get a school job starting August/September then your first contract will only last until the end of the school year in March. If you stay on, any subsequent contracts will last a year starting in April - I've never heard of anyone getting a contract that ended in the summer having started in April or the previous autumn.
As far as I know, eikaiwa contracts work in much the same way (normally running until late March regardless of when they started) but I'm no expert in this area. So perhaps somebody else can tell you if it is at all possible to get a contract that ends late summer. |

In general, someone's first contract should be for a year.
I originally arrived with Nova in September and was given a one year contract. ECC technically has contracts until March. If they sponsor your visa, they tell immigration it's for 1 year (regardless of when your contract is). |

So which would you reckon more common today? The ECC style contracts that I describe or the Nova style contract that you had (and the OP is seeking)?
I'd like to know since part of the reason I know so little about eikaiwa positions is that these employees are often more isolated; because ALTs will often meet up en masse at some point either due to ALT parties or due to school meetings etc, I get the chance to sit around with all types of ALTs with different employers, etc, sit around and compare jobs (i.e. bitch). |
