Remember Freedom fries and toast (not necessarily together on a plate)? |

I remember all that very well, but it is scarcely within the bounds of belief.
Somebody tell me that this article is but a joke, a political parody of some sort. Please! |

Very real...and you should hear all the candidates speak Spanish in their ads. Grating.
Trashing the Eurozone is easy pickings in ads right now though is it not, considering the current state of affairs? Watch Fox News and you'll see all the advertisers selling end of the world gold bonds based on the impending fall of Europe. |

Noooooo! Is this how it all ends? Idiocy not even trying to mask itself as it runs for election?
The eurozone has its problems, no denying that. But this is nothing new: it was born amid controversy. The dollar, on the other hand, is clearly not what it used to be, so perhaps Europeans should write articles about the impending fall of the US? They probably would too, if they could get away with it. But their constituents would howl with derisive laughter at such a crass and obvious diversionary tactic...
I need to sit down and becalm myself now. |

"The eurozone debt crisis, and fears that Greece, Portugal, Spain and the rest might yet drag the faltering US economy down with them, has turned Europe into a dirty word in American politics".
I dont think Europe is the issue at all. Its just a guise to take further potshots at the health insurance reform. Yes, a "diversionary tactic".
"... Republican fury over Mr Obama's Affordable Care Act, dubbed "Obamacare", which aims to extend health insurance to nearly all Americans."
Any American president responsible for the shocking state of extending healthcare to all Americans is all but the devil incarnate or so it would seem. It was always likely to be Obamas undoing. |

The basic tactic employed by the entire array of Republican candidates is FEAR. Fear of 'socialism,' fear of economic disaster (that one's more realistic), fear of a 'war on religion,' fear of 'other' religions, fear of 'others' in general, fear, and more fear.
The degree to which Americans accept and believe that these things are real dangers is indeed fear-inducing .

nothing new. this is quite normal.
there must be someone somewhere to blame for our trubbles.
the chinese economic threat.
the islamofascist terrorism threat.
the european socialism threat.
a few years back it was the japanese economy, the russian military,
and of course european socialism. that one's a constant. |

An $8,000,000 dress? (Approximately the cost of a livable-ish annual income for around 200 people--but so much more fun!) No wonder we have such a fear-of-socialism mentality! Can't put the market for $8,000,000 dresses at risk. |

Oops--apparently I was mistaken. She (Charlize Theron) wasn't wearing an $8,000,000 dress, as I thought. It was an $8,000,000 "outfit." Much more reasonable--probably included the shoes. |

Dear A Good Story,
A dress the issue:
The dress (and clutch bag) cost a mere $50,000_ The rest was BLING.
"It is for this reason that she was loaned the ravishing gown, worth $30,000, and a bead-embellished clutch bag worth $20,000 to go with it.
The bag wasn't the only sparkle - Ms Theron was dripping in a staggering $8,026,525 worth of Cartier diamonds.
Among the items she was loaned for the evening were a vintage bandeau headpiece and vintage brooch, as well as diamond earrings and a platinum and diamond ring."

Thank you, John--you have lifted a great weight from my mind! $8,000,000 in diamonds simply does not cause the same jaw-dropping reaction as an $8,000,000 dress (with or without shoes!) I will sleep well knowing that the US has not descended to the level of self-indulgent gluttony and decadence I had been imagining. |
