I am doing a Tefl course this year, and would eventually like to teach in Japan. I do not have a full degree, but would like to do a Delta or MA Education/TESOL at some point after having had a year or two teaching experience. Would the Delta and Tefl combination be enough to qualify as a post-grad qualifiaction to get a Japanese work visa? Or would an MA be more appropriate? Thanks

The laws are very simple: undergrad degree or higher, or 3+ years direct experience .

DELTA doesn't count for anything. An MA would count, although how you'd get a (real) MA without an undergrad is going to be an interesting question.

A CELTA dosen't replace a BA but experience could. Cool Do you have three years experience? Thing is that immigration dosen't care abotu the content of the course as long as you have a degree. Wink That means bastketweeving BA trumps CELTA Shocked

Alternatively, you could try working holdiay visa that migh help. It depends on your age and coutnry. Also, if you are married you can get a dependent visa if your other half isnt Japanese and a spouse visa if she is. Wink

But if you have a DELTA you have more chance of having the relevant epxerience and maybe references to prove it. Wink

Very true. But that's nothing to do with the Delta itself. The Delta is useless as far as a visa goes. Personally, I don't know why we don't see more people simply lying and falsifying the experience they need in order to get the visa.

Or submitting false degree certificates! My degree certificate would be trivial to forge. It's true validity comes from being able to pick up the phone and call the university for confirmation and, to my knowledge, nobody has ever bothered to do that.

For the same reason people don't forge their tax returns or routinely break the law -- the consequences of being discovered are severe and as a general rule we are raised to (and believe that it is good to) follow the law.

I guess that's why people never come and work on tourist visas, either.

Oh ... hang on ....

I didn't deny it happens, just why it doesn't happen more

And I suspect most people view working on a 90 day tourist visa (which, for most of them, they receive automagically upon landing) as a slightly less bad thing than falsifying documents in a formal application to immigration.

Mayebe it is easier to forge a BA than make up fake experience because people who have no experiene have to work harder to protext their lies. Confused

"Oh sure I hvae been teaching for three years in a conversational Englsih school!" Smile

"Good, today, we're using Grammar For Beginners. Chapter 25; Prepositions" Wink

"Preppa-what?" Surprised Confused
