Quals -

White face, US passport
Unrelated BA
TEFL Cert (120 hr)
Unrelated MA
Half-finished MA in TESOL
5 years experience

Wants -

School in Southeast Asia (within a cheap flight of KL)
Ability to save $1200+ per month
Adult students

So far it seems my options are restricted to RMIT in Vietnam and BC in KL. Any other good options available?

Save $1200
Adults only
not "qualified" as a teacher or lecturer. You may have 5 years of experience but you don't have the credentials.

With an unfinished MATESOL, no CELTA/DELTA, an unrelated BA and NOT a UK passport I seriously doubt the BC will hire you (but I could be wrong).

ILA or RMIT in Vietnam = I don't know anything about them specifically.

You won't make that kind of money fresh off the plane in Thailand, Cambodia, Laos or Indonesia.

You might get close in China (look for jobs in the 8000-10000 rmb range and add in some extra work).

You would be hard pressed to make it in Taiwan in your first year (mostly hourly work in Buxibans).

Go to Korea. Working adults only means split shifts (you might find uni work if you are really lucky) but it is do-able.

I have the CELTA-equivalent TEFL cert. By the time I begin a position, I'll also have a US state teaching certification (K-12 ESL), even though I'd prefer to teach at the secondary/tertiary level.

Been offered a position in KL @ 5700 rm, but I'm not sure if that will be enough. Maybe that could be doable for a year or so until I get my MA in hand, but I'd prefer a position that provides a little more cushion.

CELTA equivalent is NOT a CELTA and you are talking about the BC (the UK's international cultural relations body / Cambridge testers / CELTA guys not just some language academy). I won't say it couldn't happen but I really think the odds are long against you (visa issues come into play as well as credentials).

You didn't say anything in your OP about being (or soon to be) a certified teacher; unrelated BA, unrelated MA, generic TEFL and an unfinished MATESOL is what I think you said you had.

Pick a set of goal posts. Hard to give accurate advice if you start moving them around.

The rest of the information is still accurate for country specifics.

Just about the ONLY place an American with your credentials and experience will save the money you said you want to save is in Korea (US$1800-2000 + housing, airfare, medical, pension and severance) or possibly China if you are lucky and entrepreneurial.

Your other choice is to look to landing a position in a k-12 school in some place like Taiwan (after you get your teaching license). Salaries there for certified teachers run into the 55-80k TWD range (look at the low end since you won't have any classroom time post grad) plus benefits (housing, air, etc).

Sorry.

Wink

You're probably right about the CELTA issue, but the BC application even had a section listed for "CELTA equivalent" certifications, for whatever that's worth. I definitely won't hold my breath, but it would be nice if things worked out!

I'm really not interested in Taiwan or Korea - too far from my S.O. in KL. Financially I'm on solid footing now at a K-12 in SEA, but I'm unhappy with my workload (50-60 hour weeks) and I have concerns about long-term burnout. Would really like to get back to teaching adults with the hope that it benefits my long-term plan of a transition back to the US.

Surely once I get the MA in hand I'll be able to compete for some decently-paid positions in the region?
