So I was recently convicted of a DUII (Driving under the influence of intoxicants) and as such this will forever be on my record. I understand that some countries do not allow travel, much less extending a visa for work to those who have this on their record. Other than the DUII I have a clean record.
My questions are these:
1. Does anyone else have a DUII, or know someone who still works as an English Instructor in a foreign country?
2. Which countries do you know of that would not allow me to enter/receive a work visa? (I believe this is the case for South Korea. Please confirm or deny if you know)
3. Which countries WOULD allow me to teach English there, as well as travel?
4. Any other possible advice you may offer a person in my position who is seeking a teaching job oversees.
A little bit about myself:
I am 24 years old
I have a B.S in Philosophy
I have previously taught for a year in South Korea
I am an American |

Local record or federal record?
If a country doesn't require a CBC, that you should ( I hope) be ok. Keep in mind though, rules change all the time about visa reqs. |

I'm not sure if its local or federal. I will ask my lawyer.
Do you know which countries don't require a background check? |

You should first look at countries you'd like to teach in by checking current TEFL job openings to see if your qualifications fit. Then go to the specific country's embassy site for visa requirements. But as Nature Girl stated, visa requirements can change. |

You will definitely have problems getting a job in Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, and Russia. |

I have had different experiences in Russia: While filing for my permanent residency, I was asked to give a criminal background check. I have nothing on my record (that I know of ), but the easiest way seemed to be to have my father go to our local county courthouse and pick up such a document; it was then apostilled (is that word?) by the Sec. of State and I used that as my background check. I mean, I haven't lived in my home country for, what, 17 years.
Anyway, in Russia it depends where you are. Some regions will accept anything with a stamp on the original (any stamp) and a translation.
Good luck. |

This may sound judgemental but I don't think ESL is for you.
You showed irresponsible recklessness for other people's safety.
In other words, you made your bed now lie in it.
Please consider working in another industry and give ESL a pass.
We don't need criminals like you. |

DUI is one of the most preventable infractions imaginable (if you drink, don't drive D-UH), but to suggest that someone should be made a pariah because of a (hopefully) temporary lapse of judgment is a bit much. I am assuming that the OP has learned a valuable lesson. |

Dear creeper1,
"We don't need criminals like you."
Would that be because we're already overstocked?
I'm reminded of a line from the movie "As Good as It Gets":
"Sell crazy someplace else, we're all stocked up here."
Regards,

Wow........... what a world view....
As for the OP, just try different countries and try in country. Trying in country seems to be better sometimes.
Its interesting that a DUI would not disqualify you from teaching at an International School, or public school, but supposedly is a life time bar at a language academy. Interesting............
Another interesting fact...... The vast majority of child molesters have never been convicted of ANYTHING (I'm talking about the ones who prey on little kids... not the woman who smokes pot and has sex with teenagers). In fact it is one reason that historically their sentences were somewhat light and that they were allowed out of jail early for good behavior (historically, not recently). If I ran a language academy I would actually prefer someone with a few blights on their record for drinking or something like that (not armed robbery but public intoxication). Those kind of people are much less likely to be a molester than the holier-than though types.
If you wanted to profile someone who molests young children, you could start off by eliminating people with DUIs and public intox or marijuana arrests. Those people tend to be more interested in partying. They might do something with a teenager... you never know, but with a young kid... unlikely. The people who are interested in young kids tend not to hang out in bars.... I mean why would they? They aren't going to meet any kids there. |

Apples and oranges, fladude. Sexual deviants have seriously disturbed personalities; to compare one DUI (assuming the offender isn't an alcoholic) with a severe mental disorder is a little off base. |

Dear johntpartee,
Unless I misread fladude's post, I think he's on your (our, actually) side here.
He used the "child molestation" example, I believe, to show how any background check can be very misleading.
