Who's teaching in LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) schools? I'm thinking of returning to Toronto to teach and settle down with my wife and kid after staying around the Middle East.
What's it like to get a ESL job in Toronto these days? Is it possible?
Is it better to go into public school and teach teens/kids?
Thanks. Titanicman

The answers to these questions have been discussed and posted several times before. Just read some of the comments further down the thread.
LINC is such a low level program that most places use volunteers, usually women, or pay next to nothing.
"Bumming around the Middle East." I'd be a little more careful with your language, if you are looking for another job. It shows a certain attitude.
Also, you seem to be asking conflicting questions all over this discussion board. Do you really want informative answers or are you just bored? |

I just moved to the GTA from Barcelona, Spain, where I'd been teaching for 4 years. I got my TESL at SFU (BC). My original idea was to work for a LINC centre on the side, while doing my MA in applied linguistics at YORK U.
I've only been around for approximately a month, but there doesn't seem to be a lot going down in terms of LINC employment. There seems to be a lot of volunteerwork, and don't forget, newcomers can get a job right away with minimal or no English skills. Toronto doesn't seem the right place to look for ESL employment right now. You're more employable with a forklift cert.
When I was in BC, they advertised some LINC openings every now and then. But that was four years ago. Now, there's a place inside the Sinclair centre downtown, which has openings on a weekly basis, advertised at th HRDC jobbank, at 12 bucks an hour. |

i was in f'ton, NB, last year, and their LINC program hires honest to goodness teachers, in addition to using volunteers.
however, they hire through government funding, and thus teachers must have a B. Ed. don't get me started on how dumb-arse bureaucratic this theory is, but i said "bah!" and moved to montreal. |
