I have been accepted for interviews [edit] with these two companies (only ones I applied to). I have a degree in English and Allied Language Arts (English and Teaching). I am certified to teach and have experience through my internship (for degree) and as a sub (4-12). Should I go through either of these companies, or try to apply directly for a job?

You saw that notorious video that Peppy showed you right? Is that what you want to do? You keep mentioning your experience which leads me to think you will get bored at a babysitting type of teaching kids school. Do you want to teach or jump around and babysit? If you have 3-5 grand, then just go over there and hit the pavement.

I feel as if I'm capable of teaching at any capacity for one year. I do not want to 'just go' and then struggle to find a job - that's just not my personality or preference. I'd like to have support for my first year - learn the lay of the land and apply for a more suitable job. that said, peppy will be my last option.

On the other forum you said you were accepted for the interview only. Is that what you mean now, or have you actually passed interviews and have been offered the job at both places?

On the other forum you complained about the salary being low. Get used to it. Those are pretty typical if not at the higher end for newbies. If that is not a good enough salary for you, please explain why because you will spend half of that for basic necessities and have the other half for everything else.

Your wording puzzles me. These companies are the direct hire. They simply have a lot of branches where they will choose to post you. Both have fairly good reputations, too.

The places you need to look out for are the ALT dispatch agencies.

thank you for pointing that out - I mistyped, I have been asked to interview.

as I said, money is not a huge concern... just don't want to be underpaid with a company when I could have worked for another. I'm sure most people have this concern.

I am very new to all this - so what I was trying to ask is... is it best to go through a company like amity or apply to an individual listing for a school?

Six of one, half a dozen of the other when it comes to eikaiwas. You either apply to the big ones and hope to be placed in a good post, or you apply to the smaller ones that have only one location.

I work for Peppy and I've been happy with the job. You will most likely be placed in a rural area with Peppy, but the schedule is really light. My commutes are not bad either.

I would say the only drawback in my situation is the isolation. You might find yourself without anyone to hang out with. That will really depend on your Japanese language ability, and if there are other teachers who live close to you.

Good Luck

Peppy includes evening work and Saturdays as well doesn't it?

I like having my work done by 5 or 6 so I'm looking for something Mon-Fri 9-5ish.

Most if not all eikaiwas run from noonish to 9pm and may very well have classes on Sat/Sun. So, if you want to be finished at an earlier time, you may have only one other choice: ALT work.

Yeah, true. That or kindergarden positions with the like of Vantage etc. I don't mind kids, so I'd be OK with that.

I just know personally that if I had a job that was say 1-9pm I'd just lie in bed late, get up, go to work, come home and go to bed again.

Glenski, be cautious using that kind of language because I can guarantee that's not always the case.

I came to Japan a year ago with 2 other friends. We all took jobs at different eikaiwas: ECC PKC and Berlitz...PKC never has classes on Sunday unless some incredibly rare circumstance arises. Berlitz is similar from what my friend tells me. ECC apparently schedules some people for Sunday lessons and then gives them Monday Tuesday off..Saturday is quite common for me, though. We don't start at noon with the exception of Saturdays (if scheduled that day). ECC probably starts closer to noon than PKC and Berlitz. My friend there starts around 2pm. My TYPICAL day is from either 3:45 or 5:00pm-8:45 + commuting times (which for me are generally 30 minutes one way...train + walk), all the other native teachers in our company in the Kyoto have roughly the same.

So yes if you want to end earlier, eikaiwas are not the route to take.

My typical day at PKC starts at 4:30PM and ends at 8:30PM. However, there are a couple days during the month that start at 7PM and end at 8:30PM. You can't really beat the number of hours worked, however an ALT job is what your looking for if you like evenings free.

WOW! At Seiha, a kids eikaiwa, I started at 10am, and finished at 7, or 8pm. Not even similar. Man!

for pkc the schedule could be lighter, but you have to add in commuting time depending on where your placed. its not unusual for me to get home around 10:45pm or even later due to commuting, sometimes your class ends after the last local bus so you have to pay 700 for a taxi[or atleast thats how much it is where i am] or walk to the train station if you're up to it, but you do get reimbursed next paycheck.
