Hi everyone,

My boyfriend and I are starting a CELTA course in April so we have been looking at prospective jobs for summer/september start. I came across UIC Teachers in Japan and it looks pretty good but just wondering whether anyone has had any experience working for them and how it went?

Also the wage is pretty good (I think) 250,000JPY per month, but what would you typically be paying per month in rent and utilities in Tokyo for example?

Any help/advice apprectiated. Thanks!

At first glance, I suspect (but cannot prove...) that UIC are recruiting for Shane. Shane is a mid-sized (about 180) chain of British English conversation schools, recently bought from its parent by a cram school chain called Eikoh Seminar.

Good points:
- stable and solvent
- slightly higher professional standards than some of their rivals

Bad points:
- incredible cheapskates
- professionalism does not extend to giving the teacher any professional input on how the school is run; you just turn up on the day, and teach whatever crazy schedule is thrust into your hands
- nothing like what your UK CELTA prepared you for

For me, they got me past the need the visa for the job / need the job for the visa Catch-22 situation when I needed a foot in the door, but I was glad to find something else after 1 year, but there are others who seem to be quite content to stay their.

Indeed! Well spotted. In my mind, UIC are a couple of guys trying to make a buck; Shane is an institution where the whole is rather less than the sum of its parts.

(For the benefit of confused Americans: In British English, collective nouns can be either singular or plural, at the speaker's whim.)
