I'm curious to know if anyone here has some experience using iPads or tablets with young children either in classroom work or through tutoring. I'd love to hear about successes or failures and of any particular applications being used.
We bought an iPad over Christmas and have been using a variety of free apps with our daughter who is just under 3 years old. I'm astounded at how quickly she took to the device and quite impressed with the quality of some of the applications available, in reading, alphabet, numeracy, math, stories, etc. |

I used a Linux OS called Edubuntu and lots of you tube to vastly enhance the learning curve of a KG class one year. It was quite astounding and obvious the difference that tech can make in education. As a teaching aid of course. You still have to teach well.

We use Edubuntu on one of our computers at home. Our kids are 7 and 2, but my husband often tutors jr. aged neighbor kids and gives them stuff to do on there.
The 2 year old has a love/hate relationship with the computer--I think he (justifiably) feels like he is in competition with it for the attention of his sisters and parents.
There are many things in gcompris http://gcompris.net/-en- that are appropriate for a 3 year old. |
