A dear friend of mine is considering several potential offers in SA. I'M encouraging her to try out the ME. She's experienced, qualified great teacher and travels with a small dog.
Do any of you who are in SA have a pet and if so how is it working out?

She was told it should be a guard dog and there would not be a problem. Long stretch of mind to consider it a guard dog, but OK.

Are most of all the teaching jobs offered in Saudi providing housing on a compound for women? This would seem important if a woman isn't allowed to be out walking alone.

I know these may be answered someplace but I did not find them. I had met a woman once who had a shepherd in SA but that was years ago.

Are some compounds much better than others? Names of ones to avoid? Thanks folks

According to the US State Dept's info on KSA: "Importing Animals: All dogs, regardless of breed, may enter Saudi Arabia if their importation documents describe them as guard dogs or hunting dogs" (http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1012.html). However, supposedly, there are pet shops in the Kingdom selling a variety of dog breeds, but I haven't seen any. Your friend should do an Internet search on dogs Saudi Arabia.

The type of housing provided (compound or off-compound) depends on the employer. Also, compound housing is quite expensive. Therefore, if an allowance is offered in lieu of company-provided accommodations, it may not cover the full rental cost for an apartment on a compound, if that's her preference. Of course, whatever the housing situation, the landlord would need to give his approval regarding her dog. BTW, I'm female and like many others in the Kingdom, go out walking alone with no problem.

If your friend is as qualified as you say she is, she might want to consider the UAE instead of Saudi Arabia. Less challenging living conditions in the Emirates.

I agree with NS on this... she should expand her search to the rest of the Gulf countries.
