|
|
Hi,
I'm going to be interviewing with KAU in Jeddah. I've heard that Jeddah's the nicest city to live in in KSA, but also very expensive. I want to be able to save a considerable amount of money by working in KSA, so I"m concerned about the low housing allowance with KAU. If you shared an apt. with a few other teachers (female since I"m female)...do you think you could get beyond the housing allowance problem and save $? Are there any teachers heading there in Sept. who are looking at doing this? I don't have an offer yet, but if I do get one I'll have to choose between two jobs. I've been offered a job at a satellite campus for the University of Tabuk. They offered $4000 a month, plus a the usual benefits and a 17000 SAR yearly housing allowance. I'm sure this is more than enough for the middle of nowhere Saudi such as Duba, KSA. So....I'm thinking "have a life and save less money in Jeddah" or "save almost all your money in a sattelite campus for Universit of Tabuk and lose your sanity"...hmmmm..... so...please let me know if sharing an apt. in Jeddah could be the answer to this difficult dillema??? |

Not sure where you read or heard that Jeddah is very expensive, but you might want to check out the article, "Jeddah one of world's cheapest cities" (http://arabnews.com/economy/article469780.ece). Also, if you do an Internet search on apartment/flat rental prices in Jeddah, you'll see what the general rates are.
Off topic: What about your pooch? You still plan to bring him? |

hmm...that's encouraging. I've just been reading on here that what KAU is offering in housing doesn't cut it. Plus I looked into some of the compound prices and they were EXPENSIVE. True I haven't done a lot of actual legwork in the apt. search. What a nightmare to try to locate an apt. in the ME without speaking Arabic, but maybe JEddah is worth it.
I decided to have someone take care of my dog in the states for at least a year until I see if I can figure out a way to bring her (if I decide to try to do 2 years.) A hard decision, but much less stress.
thanks for the link |

Although it may be difficult to leave your dog behind, I believe you are making the right decision. It really will reduce YOUR stress level not to mention the dog's. Personally, I think it is rather selfish and unfair for people to drag their pets half way round the world and then typically never get to spend much time with the animal(s) anyway because of being at work all day. Especially dogs...They need alot of attention. KSA is not a very dog friendly country to begin with...so kudos to you for doing the right thing by your dog.
BTW...as a female, you would be much happier in a city like Jeddah or even Riyadh. You would still save money and have some sort of normal "life" more than you would living in the sticks. |

The info posted about the young man facing problems has a lot to do with the fact that he is Saudi. I talked to the owner of the building I'm staying at and he says nobody wants to rent to young Saudi familes - mostly young, single Saudi men. I pay 21,000SR for a three bedroom. One of my friends found a place for 19,000SR for an even nicer two-bedroom. Both places are about a mile from the KAU campus. Single ladies will have a problem and many (Western Women) share. I think it's easier for single men from the States and the U.K. to find a place. |

Dear Grendel,
"I hardly ever hear this anymore."
That's because people living in "the sticks" hardly ever use the term "the sticks."

Icanupp's correct. According to the following Arab News articles, some landlords discriminate against Saudis, preferring to rent to expats instead:
