I am seriously considering teaching english abroad, but before I take my research any further, I have a question regarding a potential roadblock. I have a a marijuana possession charge from a couple years ago that I cannot get expunged since I have already expunged an arrest from 4 years ago. This charge has prevented me from pursuing the original place I wanted to teach (south korea) since they are very strict on granting visas to anyone with any sort of drug related charges. Does anyone know if the same situation applies with most other asian countries? I have no idea how strict places are with criminal background checks/drug related charges. Thanks for any guidance anyone could provide with this!!

Taiwan = not possible to get legal work.
Korea = not possible to get legal work.
Vietnam = not possible to get legal work.
Thailand = hit and miss (depends on the employer and/or consulate issuing the visa).
China = hit and miss (legally required for a visa but often not checked or people get work on a business visa rather than a "Z" visa (illegal but common)).

As of 2015 ASEAN block = not possible to get legal work.

Japan = non issue at the moment.
Much of Latin America = non issue.

Thank you, tttompatz, for your response. I have a further question for you. When you said much of latin america is a "non issue", did you mean non issue in that i could be granted a work visa despite the misdemeanor drug charge, or that i could get by working on tourist visas by continually getting them renewed? if this is straying too much from the topic and we need to further discuss this in the general latin american forum, I have started basically the same thread in there.

combination of the above.
Some countries don't ask or care
Some countries don't issue visas so you are doing regular border runs.
I don't have current information on which ones do either, neither or both.

NOT(*) required in china. no records check. no background check required
for a work visa.

if you are applying at an international school, they MAY request a police
report. this is rare, and is required only by that particular school.

(*) possibly required for us-passport holders applying for mongolia
and perhaps tebit.
