I'd previously posted threads here, on Japan's, and on Korea's forum asking if anyone uses anime/manga or if graphic novels were even available for ELT. Turns out they are:
They dont get the use they could in our classrooms or even talked about too often. Ive heard of their existence in ELT markets, but never known anyone to use these. Really, DC comics and Marvel dominate with hundreds of high-interest titles. Why not use them? Is it because theyre still not mainstream? Movies like Iron Man should help there. Is it because teachers think theyre meant for kids? Check out The Walking Dead; youll change your mind. Maybe its just because no ones shown what they do. I can help here. So what are the benefits? Find out in this workshop.
I've also discovered Heinle published a number of graded 'classical' comics in 2009 with teacher's resource packs: Henry V, Macbeth, Frankenstein, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, Richard III, The Tempest, The Canterville Ghost

I haven't done a thorough search yet but at least I can confirm (graded) graphic novels do indeed exist in ELT. |

Oxford has some comics in their Bookworms series of graded readers, at the starter level.
One problem with comics is the intensive amount of slang. Some people might say that such a thing offers the natural English good for students to learn, while others would say it depends on the level of the students (and the specific slang in question).
There are other comic types, too, not just the all-English versions. Some (like Doraemon in Japan) have English and Japanese on the page. This has advantages and disadvantages, too. |
