Hello everyone

Is it easier to get a job at a university once you're in china? I'm thinking of getting a job in a language school first then coming over and finding a university job.

Also when is the main hiring seasons for unis? I guess they recruit mostly for September and February.

Also say I quit the language school before the contract finished, but I gave them the contractual notice and paid any penalty fees etc. Could they withhold the letter of release and make things difficult for me?

Could anyone recommend good universities to work for? I'm especially interested in cities where there would be good opportunities for additional private work and/or part-time work in language schools.

I've seen plenty of unis hiring here on Dave's and they don't specify that you have to be in china. As for salary, etc, what are your quals? I personally am looking at unis that pay at least 2K usd a month (hoping for 4K to be honest) plus housing. Look into US-Sino and British-.Sino ones.

Hi, I've just done my trinity TESOL. Before that I taught in Japan for over two years (kindergarten to high school). I didn't know you could make that sort of money at chinese unis.

Ideally, I'd like a uni with a light workload, in a city where there's good opportunity for part-time work at language schools or privates. So if anyone knows any good unis please let me know.

From what I've read it seems the best approach is to email off cvs to department heads found on uni websites. If anyone could confirm that.

Why even think of the language school step?
The uni hiring season is upon us for Sept start and you risk getting embroiled in legal unpleasantness if you quit a contract with a language school.
Your China career could end very abruptly!
A basic uni job with under 20 contact hours pw and accom provided will give you a base from which to do after hours private work. All cities down to say provincial level 3 will have opportunities.
Most uni jobs will pay less than US$1000 pm.

I'm thinking about a language school as I'll need an income before september. I finished the TESOL in Feb and I'm not working at the moment. So it would fill a gap. I see what you mean about things getting difficult, but if I give notice and pay the penalty then (visa fees etc) I'm not bretaking the contract. I guess though it depends on whether the school sees it that way for it remain civil.

It is annoying having to deal with yearly contracts, it means if you want to move on and keep the employer happy, you have to line up something for when the contract finishes. But the best jobs may not come along at that time so you may well end up missing out.

Thought that might be the case but wasn't sure. Money issues/survival are always a bit sensitive.
A language school might be do-able if you agree to teach at summer school over July-August with the absolute understanding that you will move on to a uni from the beginning of the new academic year.

Ok, here it is. Just a disclaimer: I found out about all of these on DAve's. Some of them advertise here, some don't. Some advertise on their own page. Some don't advertise at all. Some did and don't anymore, becuase, let's face it, when people know about a good thing, word of mouth is the best. It works for Dave's. It works for other places.

Some advertise on academic websites: I also look at HigherEdJob, Job.ac.uk, the Chronicle, and tesol.org

Excuse typos: my laptop's been puked on twice and is starting to turn itself off. Most of these places pay at least 15, norm is around 20. I've seen up to 25K. yuan a month . Oh, I've never worked for these places and they're not perfect. I've heard good things and bad about them all., but hey, no place is perfect.
