Hi all.
I'm around two months away from finishing my online English Lit and Language degree (without honours). I also have a Trinity CertTESOL that I got last year (with no classroom experience other than the 6 hours). I'm a 30 year old, white, UK national.
Weeeeeeelllll, anyway,
I'm looking ahead to the summer when I'm going to be able to flee into the TEFL wilderness for some interesting times. The only thing is, I can't decide where to go. I'm mean I'm REALLY flumoxed 
I'm very uncertain about what I should do. Money isn't really massively important to me in reagrads to the job, although I will have almost zero savings to fall back on. Damn I haz teh poorz
Part of me thinks I should go to S. Korea due to the money and overall packages. I figure it's a very popular destination for a reason.
Another part of me thinks I should try to find some super-easy Chinese Uni job, just to get eased in to the TEFL world, and maybe save S. Korea until later?
My confusion is not just related to these two countries, but others too (Thailand, Brazil, Japan, E. Europe and more). I really can't decide where to go. I'm blinded by the options. I've been working at my degree for so long, and now that I've ran out of excuses to procrastinate any longer in regards to getting the first job, that I'm sort of frozen.
Do any of you fine folks have any thoughts or wisdom on this most ambiguous of posts. (yep, sorry hehe). Thanks a lot. |

Don't go anywhere if you are that poor. It will still take time and money to set yourself up and look for work, let alone wait for that first paycheck. Japan has some pretty steep setup costs, by the way.
Choose the place(s) you want to go in any way you think is reasonable -- climate, culture, sightseeing options, presence/absence of fellow expats, support groups in the area, type of teaching that suits your fancy, standard of living, food, difficulty/ease of L1, previous travel experience, etc. -- but by all means don't rush into it!
Realize that timing is important, too. For Japan, you would need to apply late in the year to get on the JET program the following summer, or if you want most other entry level job options, you would already be here awaiting interview results in order to start as most do on April 1st. Timing also has to do with how long it will take to process applications for a visa.
As for any talk specifically about Korea, go to that forum (separate registration needed). Such discussions are not allowed elsewhere, according to the sticky posted at the top. |
