Anyone work(ed) at ACET? What's it like (broad question, sorry)

I have been looking for a part-time daytime/weekday work to supplement my eveings-and-wknds at VUS, and ended up being getting an interview for a full-time job with ACET.

Wouldn't mind keeping them both at the same time (will miss teaching the young kids, such a good laugh ... at times), would you recommend this? Think it'd be feasible? Or is ACET perhaps a good enough gig just for me to put all my eggs in one basket? I want to work 30 hours a week overall and am fully flexible.

Thanks for any advice.

I worked for ACET. At that time they were good apart from an eglomaniac "senior" teacher who wanted a say in everything. That person has left. Basically, good solid job, easy to get on with, but you need to know IELTS and how to teach it.

So when I worked there (3 years ago) it was pretty good, but I have heard whispers that their academic pride has taken a fall and they re not as academically proficient as they used to be.

For me at least, certainly a far cry from teaching (baby sitting) naughty kids. The students can actually carry on a real conversation with you.

There are branches in Hanoi and in HCMC- I understand they are quite different in their outlook.

How much did they pay snollygoster? And how many hours did you teach?

Hours? About 24 a week.
Presently I teach Business Eng and IELTS at a different place and get $30 hr and last week did 36 hrs.

I worked at ACET in HCMC last year. I found it to be a pretty good place to work, and the pay was good. I got $25 per hour. I only worked there for about 8 months and was considered a "new " teacher the whole time. That meant I taught pre-int and intermediate students using Cutting Edge as a core text. There's a course guide and a lot of supplementary materials. The more experienced teachers teach Academic English using the schools own in house texts from Australia. Forget about teaching IELTS there, there's only a couple of teachers who do that. You teach the same class 4 hours per day for morning and afternoon classes and 2 hours for evening, so it's pretty intensive for the students. They almost all want to go overseas for study so they are quite motivated.

One thing about ACET is that a lot of the teachers have worked there for a long time and have lived in VN for a long time. I didn't make friends with any of the people there. Not to say that it's unfriendly, but they have their lives outside work, come in for their hours then leave. If you're new to teaching and a want a place that's sociable and where people will help you with lesson planning and so on it might not be the best.

I wasn't observed the whole time I was there and I think my standards slipped a bit.

The two staff responsible for getting work permits are very good and you will have no problems with that.

I worked 22-26 hours per week there. Everyone is on a part time contract so there's no paid holidays or sick leave.

I hope that helps.

do they either pay for accomodation or help with finding a place? They don't mention that in their ad on TELF.com.

Also, is what you made there enough to live decently on, if not even save some?

Thank you

Yep. I've been working at ACET for just over two years now and it's a great place to work Cool. I actually wrote a post a while ago which might help with your question. I don't want to write it out again so I'll just quote it. Good luck to you chromium!

The OP, like many who read this forum, is interested in possibly coming to Vietnam. I'll give a rundown of my own personal circumstances and others can draw whatever conclusions they want from it. Naturally, this is just one person's experience.

Firstly (and this is important) - I am lucky in that I work for a good school. Good management, good resources and [mostly] conscientious and respectful students. My qualifications are not electrifying - got a BA (Hons) and a CELTA (also about two-thirds of the way through a PhD). I had no TEFL experience prior to Vietnam although I did teach history for a year at an university.

Pay/Work Hours: Earn $24 an hour. Teach 18 a week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday). Unless I am doing covers (which happens), I have four day weekends every week Cool. Gross salary is just over $1,800 a month but this excludes money from covers. After health insurance and tax I would typically have left over around $1500 (and this is conservative). Naturally I could make extra money by getting a second job, requesting more hours or by doing privates, but I don't need to so I don't.

Outgoings: Like I said in an earlier post, I pay $450 a month for accommodation which includes everything so I don't clean and I don't do laundry. Nor do I cook (not very good at it, don't enjoy it and I don't have to). There is a wide selection of very good restaurants within easy walking distance of where I live and I eat out for all three meals a day. Once again, to be conservative, I'll overstate it and put the price of food per day at $12. So I spend around $350 a month on eating. In regards to transport, I rent a motor scooter for $50 a month and it costs me about $10 extra for petrol.

So all up my general monthly living experiences are around $860. That leaves around $640 for entertainment and savings. Don't forget, I don't work that many hours, I live extremely comfortably, the above figures are conservative and I could easily earn more and spend less if I wanted.

Visas: Never had a problem with this myself (although I don't doubt others have). Work is currently in the process of organising (and paying for) a residency card - so no problems there.

Holidays: Under my contract, holidays are unpaid, but that's OK. Get two weeks off a year during Tet and another week during the May holidays. You can get more time off if you want it and I am planning on taking an extra five weeks off during this year. Also I have my four day weekends - so if I want to go for a few days to Singapore, Cambodia, Mui Ne, Hoi An etc, etc, etc - no problem.

Like I said, this is just my own personal circumstances but I am very happy with it. If there are more "competitive" places out there which allow me to enjoy more free time and a better income and lifestyle (with my entry level qualifications) then trust me, I'm all ears.
