Ok, so someone who worked at a school where I'm considering a position said that the school does not buy the plane ticket until your paperwork (visa, i think) goes through. This is a Saudi school.

So, basically, they have you wait and wait and wait, then once your paperwork goes through, they buy your ticket and you have to leave within 2 days! Has anyone ever heard of this. I actually know the information is accurate, so I'm partially putting it out there for other folks to beware of. But, also, do people think this is absurd or typical? Should I not even consider this position since I actually have a job that I would need to give two weeks notice to??? Confused

The salary is above 12k, includes housing, etc.

Yes, I would say it is typical....You have to have your paper work & visa processed by the Saudi Embassy first...there isn't much sense in them purchasing a ticket for you unless they know you have your visa in your passport.
Yes, this is basically the way it works...I agree, it can be very stressful especially when you have a job you need to give notice to...not much one can do... if your paper work is already being processed at the Embassy and is just a matter of waiting for the visa to come through then your only option is to give notice to your current job, so that you will be ready to jump when they say 'jump'.

My flights weren't booked until after I received my passport/visa back from the embassy. I've always been asked for the best dates to depart my home country and was then given the opportunity to confirm the actual day/time of the flight with the employer's travel rep.

If you're still interested in this position (although it's starting to sound like you aren't), then let the employer know which travel dates work for you in order to factor in that 2-week notice at your current job.
