I've recently been offered a position with Apollo in Hanoi. From what I've heard (or, the little that I've heard) it looks like Apollo is a good jumping off point for a brand new teacher like myself. I certainly was never in the market for University jobs (I'm only recently off my CELTA with a Pass B with no teaching experience) so I'm not too picky about having an incredibly high paying job.

A few questions:

1) Anyone know anything about Apollo?
2) I've always lived with more than one roommate and don't intend on changing that in Vietnam - best place to look for spare rooms open?
3) What should I be expecting to pay for a room in a decent flat that's furnished?
4) General dress code for work?

Any feedback would ease my mind.

Can be a good starting point.

After 6-8 months you can go on to better pastures.

Don't give the DOS too much respect, as he/she has not earned his/her position based on ability.

The most recent chatter about Apollo on this board is that it is a decent- enough chain school for those just starting out, and that there were some big management changes to the effect of hiring less-experienced managers for a lot less pay.

All schools seem to have a similar dress-code. For men, it is smart attire, meaning non-jean slacks, button-down collared shirt, tie, and non-athletic close-toed shoes. Exceptions often occur for more kiddie-focused schools, where a company T-shirt or even casual attire is allowed.

EVEN AN AVERAGE-SIZED WESTERN MAN CAN HAVE PROBLEMS FINDING GOOD WORK ATTIRE IN VN! So if you're a man anywhere near or above 6 feet tall or 200 lbs, think about having a decent wardrobe before you come.

Women seem to have it a bit easier, in that they get away with sandals, sleeveless and "T-shirt material-like" tops, all manner of short-hemmed skirts and capri shorts...

For shared accommodation, best is to meet people once you arrive.

Prior to arriving, there are a few things you could do to look into a shared house. If you're corresponding with someone at Apollo, ask them to provide you with email addresses of teachers at your center and / or ask them to put out an inquiry for you if anyone is looking for a roommate or has any info.

I don't live in Hanoi but I'm sure there is a newspaper, facebook group, or website that's also useful. Let's let a Hanoi person chime in on that.

I've met people who have worked at Apollo.....maybe not the best place to work but not a bad first gig. Should save some money there.

Try the new hanoin website for shared accommodation, should pick something up for between $180-$300 per month.

Might help to say what sex you are in terms of dress code. There's usually some kind of standards in the mills, I always think it's best to look smart, for the students and I think the parents like a good look too. Smart casual should suffice.

Could you elaborate? Are you referring to all of them, or one in particular? I don't imagine it could be one, since you share the genders across your condemnation. However, if it is one DoS who's a problem, could you share your insights?

If not, then it's really unfair to a new teacher to put such thoughts/attitudes in their heads. The DoS could be well-qualified, sensitive, and sympathetic. Luck of the draw.
