Hi everyone. Since the search feature is still a bit wonky here (for me anyway) I'm not sure if there's a thread on this or not yet but I would be surprised if there wasn't.
So on Monday I went to SoftBank and got a phone with 3G and wireless capabilities. I also wanted to use that pocket wireless thing and did the three-day trial to use with my laptop. Unfortunately, at my apartment the connectivity was very unstable. I was given a list of reasons as to why this probably was and the only thing that could actually apply is satellite interference from my upstairs neighbors so I'll have to get it installed more than likely and I don't mind that.
So what Internet Service Providers would you reccomend that has reasonable upload and download speeds, unlimited bandwidth, and an ok price with no surprise fees? I hate the fact that I've been here for over a month without any Internet in my apt as I miss using Skype to talk with family back home. I do use it at work but that's very limited to one person...my mother because she goes to work early and I tried to video chat through the phone but for them the quality wasn't very good, unlike when I use the computer. I also am burning through my Skype credits. |

When I first moved to Japan, I had the same problem. With some searching online, I discovered a free service:
http://bbapply.com/
Jimmy (from BBApply) helped me get a great fiber-optic connection hooked up to my apartment, and it was all 100% free.
I'm not affiliated with them, but the amount of help he provided was amazing, and I would recommend them highly.

I'll second this. I was a bit sceptical when someone else mentioned it, but I used the free service and as far as I can tell I got a regular internet connection (Yahoo BB in my case) set up with no extra charges and no hassle. |

Thanks. I submitted the availability support and already chose the service that I want (went with Hikari fiber optic [since my apt is wired for it] and Asahi). Just have to mail in a copy of my Gaijin Card. Sucks that it'll take up to 2 weeks to install the stuff. I hate not having internet. Getting down to it, this is the longest I've gone without using the internet on my own time/terms. At work atm.
OneJoelFifty: How long did it take for them to install it? |

I think it was less than two weeks. But it depends on where you live, this is the peak time for internet setup as there are university students who have moved into new places and workers that have been transferred all needing the same thing. |

For me, it was ~3-4 weeks before they could install the fiber line (not peak times, service is just slow). Once installed, it was running that day.

Maybe I won't have to wait that long (3-4 weeks) since the building is, apparently, already wired for it, according to BBApply.
Sure would be nice to work on my TEFL stuff again too. I've been away from my online course for over a month now. About a month and a half (I had computer trouble at home). I'm definitely going to have to request an extension. |
