World English. Scamming, yet again...
When will us gullible foreigners learn not to come to China on a tourist visa and work on the sole promise that the school will pay for and get us a real working visa.
A close friend comes to China -AGAINST MY ADVICE- to work at World English School in Wuxi, Jiangsu - on a tourist visa. He asked me and I blatantly told him NOT to do it. He assured me that the school advised him it was safe and legal. And of course that they would obtain him a real visa and send him to HK at their expense.
So his visa is almost expired and World English does send him to HK for a real visa BUT they screwed up and didn't give him the correct paperwork so the HK visa office tells him "SORRY NO Z VISA for you". So he buys a new 30 day tourist visa and comes back to Wuxi. They blamed HIM for not telling them the visa paperwork wasn't correct - if you can believe that.
And then World English does this - THEY FIRE HIM on the spot. The reason they gave him was he was in violation of his contract for not being available to work his contracted hours.
It gets worse than this though. They REFUSE to pay him the month + salary they owe him AND tell him he must leave the company paid for apartment right away.
So this guy paid for the trip to HK and back out of his pocket, lost over 8500 rmb for over a months pay and was forced out of his living place.
So he went to the police to complain and sought out a lawyer to to help him but for now, he's up that creek.
And this of course is not the first negative story about World English in Wuxi and it is not limited to World English in Wuxi. Another friend works part time for World English in Suzhou and said they refuse to pay him because they wanted him to do progress reports on all his students - even though there is no mention of this in the contract they gave him - so they said they won't pay him his monthly salary.
Seems World English is quickly trying to become the lowest of the low of training schools to work in China.
Teachers beware. Seriously. |

Reminds me of my first gig in China. I felt comfortable because the owner was an American (and I met with her in SF). Sad part is the school was run by her sisters.
Hopefully your friend can pull through and have a decent time here. Sometimes mistakes are a beneficial thing. |

This is the best part of the story. He knowingly and voluntarily worked illegally. He committed immigration fraud by entering the country for purposes other than a tourist/visitor visa. Not only once, but twice for the same stint of "employment." Impressive list of detainable offenses and more.

But even funnier than that was that I knew this thread wouldn't get past five posts without Captain Speed Limit logging in to "wipe away the tears of laughter." Thank sweet Jesus I'm legal now, or I'd certainly be on dude's poo-list. All you seat-of-the-pants adventurers who think you're something special because you're working illegally had better get your act together! This is the real deal! China! Takes a real man to work here and obey the rules! Are you a real man? I'm a real man! Be cool! Stay in school! Don't work on the wrong kind of visa because... it's wrong and stuff! But I'm happy you do it anyway, because without the joy of always telling everyone how stupid they are, I wouldn't have any motivation to get up in the morning. Kick butts, Dana! |

Well for all the holier-than-thou people commenting here. Perhaps the sweet talk from the school assuring the newbie that it was ok and the school would take care of him was an all too convincing siren song.
The English speaking owner of the World English school in Wuxi told him not to worry about anything and come over as she was desperate for teachers and he fell for her song.
So perhaps instead of kicking those that need help, lending some assistance might be preferable. Or have some of you been in China for so long that you forgot manners and decency? |

Call me ignorant or what have you, but I find a lot of holier-than-thou comments from the very same people who defend the worst about China and defend all the rude and actually immoral behaviour again and again.
There is no excuse for scamming someone. It's like blaming a little old lady for getting ripped off by an investment shyster. A lot of schools have experience in tricking foreigners to come to China and will use whatever words they can to get you here because guess what? The school stands to make a lot of money if they have a foreign face in their class.
Your friend got duped and scammed, nothing more. Best of all for the school, they got a free foreign teacher as they didn't need to pay him.
Who is in the wrong here? And why defend the school/recruiter? What's the motive on that, folks?
I wish I had some insightful help, but sadly all I can say is never ever trust a school that does not do things the legal and legit way because it puts everything in their court. They control you and have you by the you-know-whats.
If I was your friend, I'd avoid China. Many other countries out there. |

The friend clearly screwed up. He was told what NOT to do and then went ahead and did it anyway. Lesson learned I suppose. Or not. |

Tell me, how many people REALLY take advice from others? Do most children accept advice from parents or those older then them and listen? |

normally i wouldn't kick an injured man, however..
considering that the friend came here on a tourist visa when his experienced friend in-country told him not too..
let's just say, he deserves everything he's getting now. |
