I've been meaning to question this for a couple of months now and no matter how much I read these and the other pamphlets I have on it, there still doesn't seem to be a clear straight-forward answer, unless I just.completely missed it.
For residents currently in possession of a three-year visa status, does that mean that when applying for the resident card in July (for those who want to) that one's three-year status will automatically be bumped up to five years? |

I doubt it because immigtration is in charge of visa renewals not city office. |

Automatically? No. Because three year statuses are still possible. They're just not the maximum anymore. Just like two years were always possible, they're just rare. A coworker of mine asked for a three year, our employer agreed, immigration said, "You took this position after living in Tokyo, Osaka, and Sendai... You move positions a lot. This makes us a little nervous--Here's a two year."
None of us even realised a two year was possible, we'd only heard of one years and three years, but... there it was. Thus, with five years being the new max, we have five options now instead of three.
Also when did immigration ever do anything "automatically?" When they do, you best be making your peace, the end of the world is nigh... |
