I was thinking about signing up for membership with KSAALT (http://www.ksaalt.org/), but based on old reviews about last year's conference, perhaps I should pass on this one unless things have improved. However, since there are several KSAALT chapters in the Kingdom, I'm particularly curious about the Jeddah chapterif its "palatable." |

In my experience, most KSAALT general meetings are worth going to. In Riyadh they take place on Thursday mornings, so if you don't mind giving up a quarter of your weekend....
Plus, it's a membership of a professional body that you can add to your CV |

|
|
Greetings.
In addition to KSAALT, may I suggest that you and other ESL [professionals in KSA also consider joining TESOL Arabia, the Gulf-regional professional association for TESOL.
Most of the members of TESOL Arabia seem to live and work in the "lower Gulf" countries such as Qatar, UAE, and Oman (don't know about those in Yemen).
TESOL Arabia held its annual conference in Dubai earlier this month (March, 2012).
Hope this helps.

I'm an advocate for KSAALT for hard-working English teachers in KSA. They offer the monthly meetings, annual conferences, networking, CV-enhancement, etc. Methinks TESOL Arabia is just for folks living in the UAE. Unlike TESOL Arabia, KSAALT conference fees are reasonable.

TESOL Arabia was organized originally to be for the whole Gulf. (I was on the original planning committee) But, naturally the largest number of attendees are in the country where the conference is held. As always, it is up to the teachers in the other Gulf countries to organize their own branches, and it appears not to have happened.
Tough to keep an organization like this functioning with the transient nature of our field.

KSAALT in Eastern Province was predominantly focussed on PMU. Rapid turnover of teaching staff there has impacted on the availability of teachers to run the show. I thought it was a useful forum for social and professional get-togethres. My colleagues at KFUPM regraded it with some suspicion !
I picked up some useful ideas about new technology at KSAALT meets. |
