Hi Everyone,

My partner and I (unmarried) both have appointments scheduled in June with the emniyet for our Residency Permit application. After doing some additional reading online I've heard reports that the police will visit you and inquire about how exactly you are paying for things and how you get your money. Is this true?

I am thinking of doing online ESL tutoring before we get our work permits here to pass the time. Would that be considered a violation of the residency permit "no work" clause?

Thanks!

No, I can't imagine the police visiting you unless you gave them a good reason to do so. When you apply for the permit, you'll have to prove you have enough money to support yourself anyways, so there will be no reason for a visit.

Interesting question about doing online tutoring. If you're working through a company that's not based in Turkey, I'd say it wouldn't be illegal. However, I wouldn't mention it to anyone. As long as you bring your bank statement showing the requisite amount in your account (depending on how long a permit you're applying for), no one will ask any other questions about money.

If you're in Istanbul, then I doubt the police will stop by. However, if you're in Izmir or some small town then you might get a visit. After you get a resident permit the Emniyet sends your information to the police in your area. They do a follow-up of the foreigners in their area. It happened twice to me. I wasn't at home, but a neighbor told me they came by and there was a note telling me to give them a call. I know someone who experienced the same thing and she was a little freaked out at first, but they just wanted to know how everything was going. Nothing serious.
