yes, for the 3 minutes videotaped lesson.. do a warmer (15 seconds), then elicit the target language reviewing the previous lesson (20 sec). intro target language, model it (30 sec). drill it (10 sec), twice (another 10 sec). cough and clear your throat (2 sec). 'gomennasai' (1 sec) next do a controlled practice >> cloze sentences or pen throwing (30 sec), then a freer activation phase with concept checking (44 - 47 sec). kidding.. obviously I should be sleeping now..
I don't think they care much about the lesson content itself, hence the basic lesson plan options. just be on top of it. I think they want to see control, a positive affect, and confidence.... honestly, if you get as far as the interview... you are set barring a complete crash and burn in every phase. that was my feeling.. you will be fine!

Haha, oh... "training"
It's all pretty straightforward stuff... depends on what level of school you are going to. I didn't learn anything there... absolute waste of time.
They sometimes ask people to do some demos (not everyone, usually just the extra eager people)... 99% of the people don't listen to the directions and waste everyone's time. Take what you can get from it, but don't sweat it. |

I'm presuming you're speaking of the 6-minute sample lesson they want you to do either on site at the interview or e-mailed to them.
Interac gives you some topics, as well as access to someone who does the sample presentation. Here are a few pointers I'd recommend:
- You may want to throw out your self intro in both English and Japanese...
(Watashi no namae wa _________________ desu. Yoroshiku onegai shimasu.)
- Dress up.
- Warm up activity can be anything...numbers, alphabet, days of the week... but you should do something where you sing...yeah...sing.
- In the sample lesson (I did directions on a map), they'd like you to teach to the audience and do a 'correction' to a student who gives a wrong answer. Stay positive and diplomatic. Avoid 'No'.
- Bring visual aids if you need them.
- Don't go over 6 minutes with your personal intro/warm up/sample lesson.

"Dress up" isn't clear enough. If you are a guy, wear a suit. Its the "uniform" for anything even remotely formal/business in Japan and you will be wearing them often. Ladies, go conservative, not flashy. No low cut shirts (cleavage/chest emphasizing shirts are what the Japanese consider "slutty" not short skirts).
For the warm up, definitely sing, consider even dancing. Generally speaking, if you do your warm up and aren't thinking at the end of it "God I made a fool of my self." you probably need to add more energy and be a bit more "wacky/crazy/etc."
The video is kind of important, besides being the main way that Interac Tokyo decides on you, I have also been told that the BoEs are shown the video and they use it as a deciding factor for choosing you or not. While every BoE is going to have different criteria to choose by; being energetic, ALWAYS SMILING(!!!!!), and showing you can make a fool of yourself and laugh about it are generally very common traits that are sought after in ALTs regardless of other qualities that a BoE wants. Remember the mistake and correction and PRAISE a right answer. |

I just finished the training. the final demo lesson is 7 minutes long. they want you to only do the presentation - drilling - practice activity only.
on the first day of the week, they offer target language choices for you to pick from for the level you will be teaching. I am teaching jr. hs so I chose 3 topics to work with throughout the week from the jr hs options.
How much is _____ ? (this/that) I'm going to ______. (swim, play soccer...)
about the final demo lesson on friday, keep it simple and bare with the energy levels they want from you. its evaluated by your peers and trainers so it is stressful but no problem. if you are really consistently bad all week, they will call you in for extra training before you are set free to teach at the school.. |
