Hello,

I was wondering if anyone knew of any universities that accept visiting lecturers for the Spring 2013 semester? I'll keep the question broad at this point as I don't know of any answers.

Thanks!

Sorry for being too lazy to look up your post history to determine your credentials and/or background and experience.

As you were very broad I too will be equally broad and write in generalities.

IF you hold a PhD, are published and wish to lecture in your field there are always openings somewhere on the planet.

IF you hold a terminal Masters degree with publications and experience there are similar opportunities globally.

If you hold an unrelated masters or less, have little or no experience or are just looking at being an EFL teacher at a university for a term then the chances while not "0" are certainly pretty slim.

As an American you can pretty rule out western Europe for such a short term unless you are highly specialized (visa issues).

You will need to be on the ground (at your expense) and available during THEIR academic calendar for work in Asia.

Can't speak about the specifics in the ME or the Americas south of the Rio Grande.

Master's in TESOL from Columbia. Scant little work experience. Nov. 2011 was hired for a "university IEP program" of undetermined length.

Writes using "whilst" (British style), yet profile says they are from NY. Hmmm.

Considering this is the General Asia forum, I don't think they are interested in Europe.

Are you looking for work ONLY for one semester?

I've been working for university IEP programs since the summer of 2011, and have an additional two years of tertiary ESL teaching experience. Yes, I have masters. Yes, I have a publication and have presented at several conferences. I am American, but studied in the UK for one my degrees.

I felt that the best chances for this would be in Asia... And yes, I am only looking for one term. I don't want to leave my current position for too long. I am able to take a leave of absence for a semester, though. I feel like the time contraints would be the biggest barrier for employment, honestly. I'm willing to be pretty flexible otherwise.

Thanks for any help!

China is a possibility.

-1 term positions do come open.
-Visas are possible.
-Your lack of experience is not a serious detriment at lower tier universities.
-You don't need to be in the country to interview or get hired.
-UNLIKE a lot of Asia where the academic terms do not coincide with the North American academic calendar (spring 2013 term goes from May - Oct in Thailand as an example) the semesters in China are not so far off.

The only downsides are:
-the salary is crap at most universities and you will have no chance to save or pay down debt at home while you are working there.
-Your setup costs, while low, are not $0. You need to pay for your airfare to China, visa costs and setup your apartment.
Head for the China forum for more specifics.

In most other cases, other than work in a language academy, your chances are just about nil when looking at a job that is less than a year, won't interfere with your job at home and pays enough to recover your travel costs.

Japan will be an unlikely option. Getting a job for just one semester is the main problem. I don't think a lot of places would be willing to offer visa sponsorship for such a short time, plus most uni jobs here are only PT work, which means no visa sponsorship anyway.

Also, can I just confirm that you meant "a publication", as in just one? Aside from a thesis/dissertation, what kind was it (book chapter, journal article, etc.)?

Why do you feel you would benefit from such a short experience, if I may ask?
