At my college, in a second-tier city, instructors are hired at the rate of 12,000 or 14,000 rmb/month, depending on whether they hold the Master's or a terminal degree. Housing (or an allowance of 1,750 rmb/month) is provided, as is accident insurance - but no health insurance.

They are paid for 12 months and enjoy about twenty weeks of paid holidays annually.

My college is a joint venture between a Chinese and western university. These salaries and benefits have not changed for the past three years.

I would like to get an idea of what compensation is offered those working in a similar setting. Feel free to pm me with the information if you would rather not post it.

Sincere thanks,
-HDT

Could you post a poll at the top of your post?

From the stated salaries, I gather that you refer to private schools. My former public college employer was a joint-venture not with a western university, but with a private company. I didn't make anywhere near the figures that you cite.

With so many college jobs offering these types of salaries, it never ceases to amaze me why some choose to work for 5k a month with roughly the same amount of duties...

It's not that simple to get a job at one of the joint-venture places. There aren't as many as you act like there are and they are much more selective. In addition, they are much more serious about the work the teachers must do.

Generally the require a master's degree. And often, the teaching is not EFL. It can be business/marketing or any of a number of other areas. In that case the master's has to be in a related area. And in many cases, they want you to have some experience as a university instructor in your own country. I know of only five to 10 of these type of JV programs in China.

Because they're not qualified or dont know about it. Liverpool requires a minimum of a diploma, not a cert, plus two years experience, preferrably at the uni level.

And to be honest, I don't think there's a lot of these unis.

"Liverpool posts that they pay between 17 and 25K yuan." naturegirl321

Hi girl,

I found the Xi'an Jiatong-Liverpool University website on the internet ... apparently they have a huge English Language Center with over 100 teachers, but list no jobs open now, nor do they list salaries. The site states that they will be hiring 80 more personnel for 2012-2013.

I searched Dave's China job board for XJTLV, which it calls itself (it does not fall trippingly from the tongue:) and found nothing; the search term Liverpool turned up nothing.

Do you have a link to where the 17-25 k rmb salary range is posted?

Zero, I know that there must be dozens of these College-level joint ventures and 2+2 programs in China ... if you could post the names of a few of those it would help with my survey, and possibly be of interest to others.

Miles, my College is not a private (international) school, with certified teachers ... if it were, I think teachers would be getting about twice what my College pays.

ps: Inflation is becoming a major irritant in my city ... has anyone reading this received a merit increase or COLA (cost of living adjustment) in the last three years?

It was on their site. Guess they got all the CVs they need. They said they were going to do shortlisting in November, February and May. I got shortlisted in Feb.

Joint venture unis were discussed here already, http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=95023&start=15&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

I don't know of any school offering this. Quite the opposite in fact. One of my friends was negotiating a new contract and they simply hired a newbie fresh off the boat college grad for a lower salary. Saved them the bonus they promised and having to pay a higher salary.

My school is begging me to sign on another year but with the double-edged sword of inflation and the new tax.... there is no incentive for me to stay on. Even if they give me an increase of 10%, it still doesn't give me more than over last year (in fact less!)

The administration at my last school is well aware of escalating costs of everything. Instead of giving me a cost-of-living raise, they turned off the central air and heat!

Now, that's efficiency and effectiveness!

I just got a 5% raise. I hadn't actually asked for a raise (it came mid-contract) but I think it's partly because of the coming social taxes, as they talked to me about them just before I got the raise and seemed nervous about how the foreign teachers would react.

Nice. but you are still at -6%... and is the school going to make retroactive back tax payments?

I'll be at -6% if I can't get any of the money from the 11% they are going to start taking (they haven't started yet). I'd at least expect to be able to use the 2% that gets put on a card for in-patient and pharmacy use. The 8% that will go towards pension remains to be seen, and the other 1% seems unrecoverable.

They didn't know about the tax supposedly being retroactive - I'll just have to wait and see.
