The kind of news that could only come from this bizare corner of the world:

Quote:
An angry four-year-old Saudi boy shot and killed his father for refusing to buy him a PlayStation, Saudi media reported on Monday.

The Asharq daily, citing police in the southern Jizan area, said the child, aged four years and seven months, grabbed his father's pistol and shot him in the head.

According to the newspaper, the child had asked his father to buy him a PlayStation and the shooting took place after the man returned home without the desired object.

As he was undressing, the man put the weapon down, which the child then grabbed and fired at him from close range.

To be honest, this sounds as likely to happen in the US as anywhere else in the world...

A disturbing and tragic story. I agree with VS, this sad situation could have happened anywhere.
However, I was thinking this particular story may be useful as a starting point for a class discussion/ debate. Such as: gun control and usage/ parental obligations- guidance/ materialism in society- behaviors and attitudes towards materialism/ children's sense of entitlement...plenty of directions one could take...perhaps for an intermediate or advanced level? Cool

A 4 y.o. doesn't understand that death is permanent and this poor child will learn the hard way. I feel sorry for him.

Who leaves a loaded pistol around a 4 year old??? Stupid. The guy was obviously an idiot. Best out of the gene pool.

Crass remarks aside, does anyone know anything else about this? It seems unlikely the kid was just a spoiled brat. The PS3 might have been the tipping point, if he knew what he was really doing at all.

Who, you say? The same parents who let an 11-year-old drive a bunch of six-year-olds around town in a big SUV without any adults in the car. I saw that in Oneizah the other day. This is a busy town. My local friend from there says that's normal. People are proud of it: "See? Bet your kids can't do that!"

OK VS, let's hear you say this happens everywhere especially in the US.

I don't see how a child that young would understand what he was doing. It shows the reasons why very young kids shouldn't even be given play guns until they understand death and consequences. Especially if in a family that has guns around the house...

Is this kid any more "spoiled" than the average 4 year old? That seems an age when kids demand rather than request... and throw a tantrum even in the best of families.

You hear stories similar to this all the time in the US. Usually they kill a sibling or friend after finding the loaded gun in the parent's nightstand or a desk.

A sad tale that is more and more common here... yes BBB... and it would be foolish to deny it when you hear about it on the news regularly.

Guns of all sorts are common in KSA. I remember the security in my last accommodation would leave his AK-47 in easy access of everyone passing through reception.

And although I lived in Houston for years, on and off, I never saw a gun that was visible except on cops. I once had an irate driver in Jeddah point a .45 at me, however.

11-year-olds being allowed to drive an SUV loaded with toddlers all over town, without even an adult on board? I don't think so.

Oh, shoot:

"U.S. most armed country with 90 guns per 100 people"

Hurrah - We're Number 1

There must have been a lot of "concealed weapon permits" in Houston.

Yup

"Houston's suburbs have the most concealed guns"

In Arizona they don't even bother to conceal. You see grown men running about wearing cowboy holsters and guns... as if it were normal. Rolling Eyes

That doesn't make Houston particularly dangerous. Some years ago it was ranked as safer than London. The Qassim 11-year-old driving the SUV is more likely to kill you and a bunch of others. Creamed by a careening SUV still makes you dead. In fact we almost get killed nearly every time we go out food shopping here. Dead is dead. Never mind the extreme lack of courtesy here.
