Everyone always seems to ask about whether a monthly salary is good or not, to which the first question is always "how many hours are you working?" I'm applying for jobs now, and the hours are all over the place.
So, picture your standard uni job. You have an acceptable apartment, electricity is paid, visa taken care of, etc. What would your target hourly wage be? |

The problem is that it's not really a simple equation. If your contract says 20 hours, you might actually only teach 10 classes which are 90 minutes each. So is that 15 hours or 20 hours? Then consider that you might get paid for holidays. How does that factor in? Or what if you teach freshman and get an extra 3 weeks off for military training? How about your flight bonus, how does that factor in? You also have to consider what you will be teaching. Writing classes will involve a lot more work outside of class than Oral English. Or you might get stuck teaching 4 different courses, all of which meet twice a week. That's a lot of planning. |
