So I got a visa extension in January. I didn't know until NOW that I was supposed to inform my ward office of the extension and get my alien card changed. YIKES.
And it is holiday week so I'm not going to get in there until Tuesday!
What should I do? I know ignorance of the law is no excuse. I'm glad the system is changing soon so I won't have to run in and update my dang card every 5 minutes. Am I in serious trouble?

If you have the visa then no problem i think. The only thing they might do is tell you they are a bit annoyed. Best to apoligize and say you know you are bad but will try to become a better person in future. Very Happy

You won't be depoted theough. Wink

Stay cool! Cool

ETA: In fact, they may say nothing at all and not even care. Sometimes I ahve forgotten to update info for my gaijin card. Things like address, employre etc... and they either didn't seem to care and just changed it or one day I had a guy with a bad mood who said "3kagetsuna!!! Okashii da yo!" in Amagasaki. He was a bit annoyed. Rolling Eyes

They might make you write 反省 (kind of a reflection of what you did wrong).

They're not likely to care about updating your address or employer. If they made a deal out of it with me I'd simply point out that most Japanese people don't update their address when they move. I know people who haven't lived in a place for 5 years and they can't be bothered to update their address.

It depends on the person you deal with- as above you might get any reaction ranging from "no problem but don't do it again" to having to write out an apology.

There's no actual penalty though that I know of and you won't be deported.

You should be fine... especially since the ward office will be able to see that you've had a visa the entire time. The person might be a little annoyed with you, but I don't think it is something you need to worry about. I had a similar situation once and the person at my city office didn't even mention it when I went to have my card updated.

UPDATE:
So, nothing happened Very Happy
I went in and apologized but they just waved it away and said everything was fine and I was stamped and out the door in 5 minutes.
Cool
