I turned down a job offer in Istanbul. I wasn't willing to admit it at the time, but I see now I found Istanbul too cramped, crowded, and overwhelming. So I went to Izmir, following rumors of a high demand even among universities.

The rumors of the job market in Izmir are greatly overstated; you can find work, but not a job; you'll get a handful of hours and poor-mediocre pay. Even Yasar Uni and English Time didn't respond to my cold calls (and in the latter case, the manager actually ran into me at lunch, struck up a conversation, and told me to apply). So while I absolutely loved Izmir, I'm at the "borrowing money from my parents stage," and if I want to be self-sufficient (and pay them back), it's time to move on, hopefully while staying in Turkey.

I'm heading onto Adana, via Ankara and Konya, because Adana, Gaziantep, and Mersin are Turkey's 5th, 6th, and 10th largest cities and Ankara and Konya 2nd and 7th. I went through Ankara because I had to; I found it underwhelming, though it's actually not much larger than Izmir (just much a whole lot uglier outside the tiny island of the old city) and I'd be willing to work there if I had a decent job with a reputable employer. I went to Konya because I wanted to; I love what I've seen, but http://forums.eslcafe.com/job/viewtopic.php?t=88740 indicates that there are no schools worth working for here.

But there's so many cities in Turkey. I'm going to check out the three I mentioned, and the thread suggests Kayseri, which would be an overnight trip, but possibly worth it, to drop of resumes in person if there are decent schools. (I know at least one to avoid the hell out of.) I suppose Bursa is also a possibility; though I was underwhelmed when I went there I like it better than Ankara.

So yeah, any suggestions for schools/cities beyond the main tourist/expat areas?

Thanks and regards,
~Q

I just took a job in Ankara, it's a beautiful city. It's big but not crowded like Istanbul and doesn't have water but who really cares (not I) In my opinion, Konya is too conservative and I've been to Kahramanmaras (bordered by Adana, Malatya, Gaziantep and Mersin) also conservative but a small cute city. Look into Gaziantep or Mersin.

How about near black sea? Trabzon is a pretty large city from what I've heard.
