Hi all,

has anybody had experience teaching the RAF in Oman? is it a sound job offer or another falsely appealing ad?

I'm attached to the Royal Navy Oman, but hired by RAFO. The Royal Air Force Oman hires all the NL teachers and then you get 'posted' to one of several bases. What have you been offered? Have you had your interview in London yet?

I've just been shortlisted for an interview in London. Any feedback to share?

Note: the money on offer is very poor. Looked at closely, it's designed to hook inexperienced people, and then to keep them for as long as possible, which in reality turns out to be about a year, LOL. If you're going to interview, ask for a basic of OR1200, at least.

This is the Omani military yes? Why would they pay in a foreign currency? Omani Riyals are internationally convertible to whatever you would like.

At the risk of posting the worst pun of the week - they struck me as being more than just a bit "fly-by-night" when I had a chat with them several years ago. Furthermore, it took me the better part of six months to get my travelling expenses out of them.

Good Luck.

I've been here months and haven't received a pay statement yet, I've no idea what expenses I've been refunded, I paid out almost a grand. The organization here is appalling. The Omani embassy in London lost all my expense receipts and ordered me to resubmit the originals. Doh!
Yet, because of all the medical and dental hoops they make you jump through and pay for in advance, teachers see out the year to get their dosh back RAFO, unless desperate, avoid! If you can.

Hey, Van Gogh,

Sorry to hear about your travails. Maybe everyone should boycott their interviews in London this June? The pay is absolute rubbish.

7168Riyadh, have you had your interview? I was told I was shortlisted but haven't been given a date yet. Is pay not as one would expect?

You are paid in Rials with mystical allowance for the exchange rates.

hHold: It depends on what you're expecting, doesn't it. I wouldn't even go to interview on the basis of what they're offering, would you? The pay is a joke. If teachers accept this level of pay, then they will find teachers, and think themselves clever.

hHold, I've been shortlisted too and have no date for interview yet either.

All this talk of the RAFO is not encouraging and I'm wondering if I'll find a decent outfit in the gulf. Already turned down one place in Kuwait that sounded like a nightmare.

Funny I turned down a job in Kuwait too. Must have been the same position. My interest in RAFO was teaching the military, something which I have never done but was excited to experience. Needless to say my enthusiasm has gone down a notch. If you hear of any sound job offers in the ME will you let me know? I've have had run-ins with TEFL employers in the past and I no longer have the patience to deal with them.

Its worth bearing in mind that although the Air Force RAFO do the recruiting, you may be attached to any of the forces, air, army, navy. Some bases can be rather rustic and very rural. Wooden accommodation is mentioned in the contract and I don't think they're referring to cosy log cabins.
