I'll be in Mexico in a week and I'd really like to live by the coast. Cancun is way too touristy maybe Acapulco is too. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The problem with looking for work on any of the several Mexican coasts is that anywhere there are TEFL opportunities, the cost-of-living is high and teaching positions tend to pay poorly.

Merida is not far from the coast - first stop from Cancun I would guess. There's Villahermosa and Ciudad de Carmen on the same route west. Veracruz next, keeping you on the gulf coast.

If the Pacific coast is your thing, there are plenty of places not far from the coast and maybe on it. The interior states are heavily populated and nowhere is really that far from a coast.

Well, I didn't recommend it...just said it was there! GH says he's going to trip around from Cancun..he/she'll figure out what's a good spot says I.

As for distance, I guess it depends on your point of view. 5 hours to the Pacific or Atlantic from DF is pretty close to this Ottawan where the same trips are 4 days, 1 day or a dogsled to a coast.

There�s lots of work in Guadalajara, and it�s not too far to the coast, as well as the lovely towns of Chapala, Ajiic and Tequila. Mexico City is not really close to any coasts, but we do have these lovely articifial beaches that our lovely (insert sarcasm Twisted Evil

) sets up for us (instead of repairing the sidewalks) from time to time.

Coastal cities are tough, veracruz or Merida (kind technically isnt coastal, but a 30 min drive from a coast) would be your best bets..

Non Coastal cities, I recommend Guadalajara or my city; Queretaro. Queretaro is so often overlooked, but its a beautiful colonial city of about 1.4 million, which is growing all the time, Queretaro is one of Mexicos safest and most prosperous cities at the moment, with lots of teaching opportunities.

No one has mentioned Chetumal.
I have seen a job or two posted there over the years. The city seems to be growing and so do the local universities--so there may be work there. I know my husband saw jobs for mathematicians posted there, but I turned up my nose at the weather! I perfer not to sweat all the time, thank you.

Hey there, so I dont know if you are still looking but I just got a job at Colegio Americano de San Carlos which is located in Playa Miramar in Guaymas, Sonara on the Sea of Cortez. I know that San Carlos is a very touristy place, which I am not looking forward to, but the school is located about 20k away and I will choose to live there with the locals. The ocean is beautiful (although no waves, so forget surfing if that is what you are in to) and there is also a University close by which you could check out for work too. I really recommend contacting CASC for teaching positions. The year doent start until Aug. and the pay seems to be decent...

Just an observation, but you seem to be promoting the school before you have worked or been there. It almost comes across as advertising for the school, which I am sure is not your intention. Check it out and let us know how your experience was. Pre-kinder is VERY challenging here in Mexico, so wish you luck.

I also work in Guaymas (which San Carlos is a part of - Nuevo Guaymas, officially) and it's a nice place to live.

Whether or not I would recommend Colegio Americano - without having worked there, only on what ex-employees/friends have said - is another issue. It's a wonderful place to work, though the first three months of the school year are almost unbearably hot!
