Many foreigners enjoy their jobs in China very much. Otherwise, they would leave. Why do you like job? What is the key factor that makes it a good place to work?

"Why do you like job"? Your logic is faulty. There are FT's who have been in China for years who hate their jobs. It seems a lot of the guys are just here for the women. Others are backpackers who need to finance their travels. Some are hopeless alcoholics or sociopaths who could never hold a job back home. Some love the low hours and low living expenses. Some are married to locals. In my case, I like my students but would certainly not categorize most of them as "excellent" by a long shot. You need more choices or a "none of the above" choice.

The money in China can be great. Where else could someone three years out of grad school work a 9-to-5 and save US$25,000/year while enjoying 3 months of vacation? I wish I had a teaching certificateI'd be able to earn even more.

No option of "The job is easy" or "Lots of free time". I think these are big reasons for a lot of people. I chose 'the city is a great place to work' but "lots of free time" is my real reason.

That is good. You could use the other time to get more part-time work or private students, make a lot of money to get married!

It's all about the money, baby. Factoring in my net pay, bonuses and other $$ (I would have put in the yuan sign instead, but alas, my keyboard doesn't have that!), free rent and utilities . . . I'm easily bringing in more than I did when teaching back in the states!

two options for this:

1. Do not qualify for teaching jobs anywhere else
2. I am too f@#king lazy to get a real job Wink

Which one is you?

Im sure this thread will go downhill pretty quickly! but anyway ...

The money is good. Considering the actual hours I work, the benefits of free housing and utilities, and the flight money home, the overall package is a pretty good one (compared to TEFL in the UK) And I have one of the much-maligned low paying jobs too!

The management is reasonable. Been thinking about starting a thread about our employers, my school owner and edu department manager are great. The reason I might start a thread is because I know there is a lot of flack directed at our employers, but I cant actually remember an employer in the UK who was better than my Chinese employers. Scary, but true.

The students are excellent. Of course Ive had troublesome students, but generally ... agree, the students are excellent. I teach adults, they are normally motivated, fun and good company. No complaints there either.

The city/town is a good place to work. Posted about this many times. Ive worked in Yangshuo twice and its pretty much a perfect place for me to work. Id like a cinema there, but no other complaints. Might not be for everyone, but I like the place a lot.

I do not qualify for jobs in my home country. There is some truth to this I guess. I teach EFL in the UK and in China. But, EFL in the UK is so difficult to get into. The best local employers really are quite cliquey and its very very hard to get decent long term contracts with them. I do qualify for them, (BA+Trinity+6 years experience) but Im not really prepared to go on a holiday / sickness cover list for three months, take contracts that are just two weeks long, and submit formal lesson plans for each class in the hope that Ill be offered a longer contract at some stage in the faraway future. Especially when the jobs only pay about 120 RMB per hour anyway!

Yeah........

... but I'd love for someone to explain how it works. Especially that saving US $25K part. Also, how much difference could a teaching cert possibly make?
