Do most people find teaching jobs from their home country or from within Turkey? Please share your experiences.

Neither one must PRAY to find a teaching job in Turkey. There are so few jobs available and so many TEFL teachers looking for work in Turkey. Competition is extremely fierce and pay minimal. My advice is just buy a plane ticket to Turkey and knock on doors like travelling salesmen do. You might get an offer or two but with little if any benefits. Good luck in your search! Rolling Eyes

Hi, I might also add that if you do decide to come over to Turkey to find work, do two things: 1. Bring between 1000-1500USD to tie you over as Turkey(especially Istanbul) is expensive and , 2. buy a ROUND-TRIP ticket so you don't end up getting stranded in case your job search backfires; and needless to say, it happens sometimes.

Either way, good luck,

Recently you posted on the Thailand board about the poor salaries there and how many teachers are leaving for "greener pastures." "Good luck in your search!" you told would be job-seekers with a grin.

I asked where those "greener pastures" were and got no answer. Now you post about the poor job market in Turkey and how only prayer will help a job seeker there. "Good luck in your search!" you tell them with an eye-roll.

The larger context begins to come into focus with these cross-board posts. Please tell us when, where, or if you ever find the truly green pasture. And until then, good luck in your search! Wink

Hello Mel,

It really depends on the type of job you are looking for. Just going on my experience, I wanted to get a job in the private k-12 sector (I'm a qualified English high school teacher) and I was aware that recruitment began in March/April. So I did some research for about a year, asked alot of questions. I created a list of potential schools (and ones to avoid - thank you Dave's ESL!) and began to send out my CV while still at home so I had a few options lined up for when I arrived in April. From what I understand, the language schools might have more flexibility in terms of hiring times. So my advice would be to do alot of research (read these forums) and start sending out your resume and asking for meetings/interviews around the time you plan on arriving in Turkey.

All the best!

To find a teaching job in Turkey my advice would be to contact Turkish EFL teachers teaching in Turkey as they are the ones getting the few (if any) job offers these days...especially in Istanbul...due to the very high unemployment amongst them and ask them to help find you a job teaching English.. Nowadays the trend is to hire Turkish EFL instructors the main reason being pay as Native Speakers demand much more money. Also since Turkey belongs to the Turks they have the legal means to work there without the monstrous residency and/or beauracratic visa paperwork needed by foreign Native EFL instructors. Good luck in your Smile search!
