(Asterisk in front of school name denotes they definitely hire foreign teachers)
A few international schools hire for a June start while most hire for the August start. Most will answer email inquiries. Phone lines can be difficult because .. er ... well ... it's Myanmar. I guess it goes without saying the language academies hire all year round. They actually answer emails as well (believe it or not).
All is possible if you try. Good luck!

This is great information Teachurrr. I am researching teaching in Myanmar at the moment.
Would you happen to know what the average pay is at language academies there? I'm assuming there is an hourly wage figure, as is the case usually at language academies, as opposed to the monthly, packaged fixed income of International schools. Is anyone aware of any other kind of remuneration at language academies in Myanmar (for example, a housing allowance) ?
Great list and thanks for any further info out there regarding language academies in Myanmar and remuneration.

This is great, thank you very much!!!
I was wondering how you got to Burma as from what I hear one has to play a visa dance and go by way of Thailand. |

Disclaimer: I have never been to Myanmar much less worked there but, For what (little) it may be worth:
I responded to a job posting by Total Learning Academy / Brainworks last month, for a job in their branch school in Taunggyi (in the North Central part of Myanmar, near Mandalay). It is a private K-12 type school. The HR manager responded positively to my email and "escalated" my application. However, a little further up the road or to put it exactly, one email exchange later they dropped my application. The reasons for this however would not apply to the majority of (Western) foreign teachers interested in working in Myanmar. Basically they asked for answers to some questions about teaching as well as "tell us about yourself, what makes you special, etc" and also asked for questions about living and teaching in Myanmar from the prospective teacher. I informed them that I am currently teaching in Indonesia, have married here and that my wife (and at least nominally, myself) is (are) Muslim. I felt it was important to talk about this fairly early on in the application process for reasons which you will understand if you are aware of current and recent conditions and events in Myanmar, particularly in the Western states, and the general atmosphere of religious and ethnic tension which exists there. I asked if, in the opinion of the HR staff, we would be likely to be welcomed and treated well in the community or, would we (either of us) be likely to face any kind of resentment or even harrassment (or possibly even worse) from the Buddhist majority of the local population. After I submitted this info and question, the next email I got from HR there informed me that they had had a long talk with the head office in Yangon and were sad to say that they felt there was some validity to my concern and they themselves were concerned enough about whether we would both be comfortable living there, to the point that they were derailing my application as of that day. Of course I was disappointed about that, but they were probably doing me and my wife a favor, or at least felt that they were, and they are the ones in the best position to know the situation and atmosphere there. As I said, this issue will probably not be relevant for most people interested in living or working in Myanmar, but it's a good idea to be aware of such conflicts and issues (speaking of the Rakhine / Rohingya conflict) in general when considering going to live there. Ie the unsuspecting could find themselves suddenly in a less than comfortable situation when and if trouble breaks out in any given place, for whatever reasons.
In general though the school seemed good going from the website, the way the job posting was written and the way the HR staff dealt with me - it seemed like the kind of school that actually cares about providing good education for students, and good conditions for good teachers.
In my brief flirtation with working in Myanmar, I also contacted ALBA (Asia Language and Business Academy) in Yangon, who replied that they were not recruting for "ESL teachers" at the present time but would contact me when they were... and I did not have any contact with Horizon International School, but they were looking for teachers for a summer school program, fairly well-paid (their summer break is in April and May I think, or is it March and April -soon, that is) with the temp post serving as possible probationary period to longer term contracts... Ayeyarwaddy International School had a recent posting but it explicitly stated they were recruiting only Peace Corps veterans, for whatever reason I don't know... dat's all I know. |

Most of the schools, language academies (and international schools) you have listed here only hire Myanmar nationals not EFL native speakers to teach English....and the salary and/or wages are very low. There are only a handful or few schools that will offer decent salaries to native English speaking teachers....mostly in the Yangon area. Myanmar may be developing fast with Chinese investors buying up all the real estate but it is still a third world developing country. |
