I would like to make a documentary about my experience there, but I know that taking pictures is a touchy matter. I would especially like to interview my female students, but I don't want to get 50 lashes, my camera smashed, or confiscated. Anyone have real knowledge about doing this or how to get permission?

What do you mean taking pictures is touchy? I haven't walked around with a big SLR or anything, but I have seen people taking photos. As long as you aren't snapping away at military or government buildings I don't think it is an issue.

Your students (if Saudi) will likely keep their veil on for the interview, but they should be accommodating.

Dear vamanos12,

yeah...
It seems risky, and I imagine that it might be ok much of the time, but then if you get unlucky and somebody makes issue...............it could lead to a big pain.

Don't photograph any camels (although I have) as it casts an evil eye on ... somebody or other, so I'm told.

Regarding everything 'forbidden' in the kingdom...it pays to be discreet.
I know several people - Saudis and non-Saudis that are very keen about photography. I think you may find people who may be willing to let you photograph-interview them, if you are selective and take the right approach.

In my view, taking photos is ranked fairly low in terms of discression, but it does depend on where and what you are taking pictures of. Not so sure about video...may want to have alook at this blog: www.blueabaya.blogspot.com
This Sandinavian woman married to a Saudi seems to be taking plenty of pictures in Riyadh and elsewhere and writing plenty too.
