One of our great Canadian poets, Irving Layton, made his living as an ESL teacher in Montreal.
The venerable Marcel Duchamp worked as a French Conversation teacher "when he needed the money".
Gertrude Stein claimed that her writing was only possible because she lived in an environment in which she wasn't surrounded by her native tongue.
Our own Khmerhit has mentioned the book he was working on in Phnom Penh.
It seems that many people take inspiration in the expatriate, foreign language environment.
I myself am hard at work on a book of "Patphysical Found Poetry" called further ash
