I have the same problem. I can't seem to install Japanese text support on this computer even though I have the cd rom that it is asking for. I faithfully put in the disk, and it claims that it is doing something, and then it gives me an error message. I check out Japanese sites by using www.babelfish.altavista.com as a translator site.

I tried the babelfish as you mentioned. g ood call! I have made some progress towards actually reading e-mails. In the XP there is 1 or 2 things to double check in Control Panel. Now along the bottom bar i can toggle between EN and JP but still wont type. I find that in netscpe & the EUC-JP encode option let me read the email...but Crikee! Im forgetting kanji now!!
Be careful with the babelfish , keep your sentences short and watch idioms.
it translated a " so...well, I " as YOKU = nicely done! (well done),so i edited with romaji. Celeste, the files i got from Msoft home were Jamondo.exe and msjaime.exe if you look up Global IME... W2000 looks more simple than XP.
New and improved it aint . Waaeeeh!!
Mad

The Netscape browser will display Japaneses Characters.

Netscape Messenger (Email program) will display and write Japanese characters, however it is using MS IME to write the characters.

Netscape can be downloaded free at www.netscape.com

MS IME for Windows XP can be downloaded free at:
http://office.microsoft.com/downloads/2002/imejpn.aspx

For earlier versions of Windows go to:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ime/install.asp?gssnb=1

If you go to www.microsoft.com and type IME in the search box you will be directed to information and downloads that are supposed to make Japanese work with all Microsoft products.

Installing the IME will put a little blue box with "En" on your tool bar. Clicking on this box will pop up another box with a list of lanuages; click Japanese. Type the Japanese word you want in Roman characters; a Japaese character will appear. If it is the character you want, press enter and you are ready for the next word. If it is not the character you want, press the space bar; another character will appear. If you press the space bar a couple of times, a box with different characters pops up. Click on the character that you want. One nice thing is that the program "remembers" the characters that you use most frequently, and these characters are the first ones to appear when you type the word.

Ting bu dong

No entiendo su pregunta

Ich verstehe die Frage nicht

Well, if you don't have any version of Word on your computer, download Netscape for free and MS IME for free and you can use the Netscape Email program with the MS IME.

BTW, Office is pretty expensive and includes a suite of products. If you just want the word processor, look at Word sold individually or at Works.

sorry about the nihongo withdrawal fix there, Paul. after hearing it all week for 5 years and suddenly all you see is Bush ontthe TV, well u might even miss Pokemon animes. "Fai-to" is "gut it out ' or 'try'. mo ippatsu is another shot (yes, can be heard as sexual, so careful). anyone who watched J-tv
about 3 years back will remember it as the motto of a genki juice ad of 2 guys doing
Bruce Willis type stunts thnx to the drink. .....back to the IMEs
1st paul is right, dont think about buying OFFICE XP, less u r rich, but one error message told me I needed it. was because i tried to load IMEs i didnt need. it seems that Windows XP is very different from 2000 and before as that japanese IMEs are preloaded in XP. still its bit tricky to access them. demo Yatta Very Happy
Finally did it. so, FIRST go to regional Options (Con Panel) make sure to APPLY Asian languages. my Next step wasnt needed; but just to be sure i installed a Windows download file: ie_ja.exe, but it seemed too small to have all the kanji fonts. the other larger Msoft .EXE type files wouldnt even open.
Then I read you dont need these so I started looking for signs of a "switch" to work it. As Paul said, you should soon see a EN / JP toggle switch in your systray (near the clock - bottom right) but u r still not home Crying or Very sad
next, i clicked the "EN" and got the option to "show the language bar".
CLICK THIS. The bar will be real long and move up top and finally you can choose EN or JP
and hiragana, katakana modes, etc. If u dont get the long bar, it WON'T work!
... is really too bad you cant find any instructions for XP IME thru search engines, cept for few notes under a 2000 page that says NEVER DOWNLOAD any IME for XP.
As most folks have W2000, yes they gotta download the IMEs after a quick yahoo search for "global IME"s. a browser suport pack may also be needed for old IE browsers. the lang Bar is likely the same drill as my case. I just tried writng in IE Explorer, No Prob! so u dont haveto get Netscape to do this. ...guess the main point is dont give up on writing nihongo, you can do it with paying a cent (yen, shekel). Smile ii desu, ne!
now that I wanna learn Polish, gotta figure out how to key that stuff someday. ...aber, Herr Paul, nicht so wichtig.
sore ja, tom

yeah, i have/had that problem on my computer too. god knows how to install/use the global IME thing. i have the disks but could never figure it out. but now i don't have to as i use a much simpler effective product.

www.njstar.com has what you're looking for. it comes with japanese, korean, and chinese versions. i use njstar communicator to change the fonts on my webpages (and type into them) and njstarsomething-else for word processing. it's free which is real good and so simple and easy. toggle button at bottom of the screen, one click, instantaneous. the thing basically sets itself up to.
