I am not only talking about a language school, but a Colegio as well. I know 2 people who started a language school and now they are in the process of trying to open a Colegio here in San Luis it would be a school where English would be the primary language of instruction except for Spanish class and Mexican Sociales class. Very Happy They have asked me to come on board, but I'm skeptical whether such a school could suvive here in San Luis Potosi. Confused

Does anyone know anyone who has opened such a school here in Mexico and do you know any such schools who have survived and prospered. I would really appreciate any info at all. Question

I know a couple who started a primary school around 1980 and they say that they would never recommend it. They've been trying to close the school for the last 12 years, but Mexican regulations make it practically impossible.

What? Not trying to be a wise guy, but what law could possibly prevent someone from closing their own business?

Because a primary school that is recognized by the SEP (Secretary of Public Education) can not leave it's students high and dry. So you have to graduate out your students and stop new enrolment, but you also have to give a place to younger siblings of current students. So it can be very hard to stop new enrolment. Just as labor laws protect workers, these laws are meant to protect students. The school can't just up and close on a student. In a larger city they would probably be able to sell the school, but they are located in a fairly small town.

It depends on the market they're aiming it at. In SLP you have a small group of 'prestige schools' that charge $2,500+ a month in kinder (going up to $3,000+ in primary etc) plus the $10,000 or so inscription fees plus books plus numerous 'quotas'. If you know SLP well then you'll realise that these schools serve about 5% of the population as they are the only ones that can afford them. These schools are well-oiled money-making machines but provide the best education in town.

Then you have a wide range of private institutions that charge much less than the prestige schools but are obviously nowhere near as good. A lot of these schools get dubbed, 'escuelas de corridos' (schools that will accept kids thrown out of better schools) and this of course affects the quality as I'm sure you can imagine.

I would say there's a huge demand for the type of school you mention for those that can't afford places like el Andes, del Bosque, el Aret, el Real et al. The competition is tough at the top end of the market unless they have millions of pesos to invest in it and know all the right people.
