I have been verbally offered my first job at an international school and was wondering what a reasonable / good package for compensation would be? I am aware that most of the posters on this board are esl teachers but would like some insight from people with knowledge in this area. |

For someone with proper teaching qualifications back home? Anything that is Monday to Friday, weekends off, 9 to 5 (8 to 4) offers private, secure, single furnished housing near the school with all utilities paid, offers free tuition for my children, proper working (Z-visa) and a salary over 22,000 a month with year-end bonus and all travel expenses paid and summers off would catch my eye.
Anything less and I wouldn't even read further, but that's just me. Everyone has different standards and qualifications.
The absolute lowest I have seen lately for an international school was 9000 a month, no housing provided. The highest well over 30K, all the bells and whistles offered.
Good luck. |

Depends if it is actually an international school (accredited by CIS? an IB World school?)
or if it is just a school with the word 'international' in the name, which is obviously far more common.
Judging by the fact that your offer was verbal, and by the apparent absence of a salary scale, my guess would be that this school is of the latter type. So the rock's guess would probably be closer than whiner's. |

Yeah, our school has a so-called "International Department" (but easily 85-90% of the students are mainland Chinese! Go figure.), and they start the salary at 10,000 plus the other benefits such as housing, air fare, etc. However, they don't require a degree/background in education (and most importantly, elementary education), but putting that on your resume is more helpful. I've seen "teachers" come in who are WAY over their heads due to the requirements of the job, and some that do a splendid job without much or any experience. So there you go. |

What GWOW said. A true international school offers a western based and supplied curriculum and is accredited in its home country. Upon completion of studies, students may either transfer to a high school in the western country or enter post-secondary studies there. Taechers must hold credentials as certified teachers in their home countries. Any place that poses as an international school without the above qualifications is bogus. No less than 20k per month with all benefits.

It's an American curriculum school. I was given a salary range of what I will most likely be offered. I will get the contract soon and run the package by you posters to see if it seems reasonable. Do schools like these mind if their teachers take side esl private jobs? Should the housing cover utilities, cable, internet? What do bonuses or end of year bonuses consist of?
Thanks everyone! |

All of these things will depend on your school specifically, and be detailed in your contract - we can't help you there. There is no nationwide standard for such things. (Maybe I should also point out that side work is in fact illegal).

That depends on two factors: 1, your location, and 2, how much your housing allowance is..
3000 per month in Kunming? Great ~
4000 per month in central Shanghai? Very limited. |

I can't speak for the rest of China but if it is in Beijing you will want to be getting 16,000 and if no free housing is offered then 20,000 a month. |
