Ladies n Gents,
An ex-coworker of mine is looking to work at the English language centre at Hail University in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He wants to know if any of your good selves know anything about it on the academic side; such as facilities, support, computer assisted learning lab and, essentially, the sort of training materials that are currently in use there and so on.

Grateful to those who can help this fella with info as dave's is not accepting new registrations until 8 August so he can't get onto dave's boards to ask directly.

I wonder why new members are not being accepted. Maybe Dave is on holiday or something?

Latest news from UoH via a reliable source:

Those employed via M-Trading have not been paid for the last 3 months. A member of staff went on hunger strike to be heard from a representative, employees are still waiting to paid.

As for facilities, teaching staff do not have computers or printers, forget language labs!

Those that are direct hire are having the conditions of their contracts challenged.

For further updates PM me.

I'm still surprised that people still ask about this university. Do a search and within 2 minutes, you will see many, many things wrong with the U of H. My advice is to ask for the email address of around five instructors that work there and ask them before you make a choice. I would even spend the money and call the instructors and speak with them on the phone. Its worth the money NOT to have a bad experience. Maybe the U of H is getting better. Find out before you sign a contract. I turned down a few offers from places (both inside and outside KSA) because they didnt want to (or made excuses about how they cant) give out contact information. I can understand that it may be private info, but see what happens. If its an OK place to work, they should be able to provide you with some contact info. Make sure the instructors have the same background as you, so you can relate better to their comments if you get my drift. Wink

yes, the only contact email I got when I requested one was from a Pakistani English teacher who also works at the university and I wasn't sure his opinions would be as valid as I would like. It's not that easy to contact current workers at prospective place of employment.

Yes, it's hard to get in touch with the right people (instructor/teachers) that work at where you might want to go, but I do feel it's worth the extra effort. I feel that there is a link between recruiters (the in-house ones and the ones who just "pimp" us out) that can provide you with names and contact information of the teachers that you would work with and others that dont/wont. It worked well for me when I was in Oman, South Korea and the U.A.E, but poorly (because I didnt listen) when taking a position in Taiwan. I think an in-house recruitment staff like the one at KAU, would be better able to provide that information to you. I did find it much easier to get the information when applying for jobs in East Asia and much harder for those jobs in the Middle East.
