|
|
I may move to Ibra this fall (in spite of all the bad reports). It's always a trade off and I happen to like the people that I have met there.
Has anyone rented in Ibra and if so what were the rental costs? I will rent my own place rather than stay at the university apts.
The type of place that I want to rent will have a small fenced yard where my well trained dog can go in and out freely without any danger.
Sharing is not out of the question and the right housemate could make life more enjoyable as well as help to save on expenses like internet, and bills. The right person to me is sane, non-controlling personality, non-smoker, flexible and well just a good balance of respect.
P.S. I quit posting for awhile on here, as I, like anyone, does not like to be scrutinized or bullied. Just be respectful please. |

I thought from your previous posts that you wanted to get away from Oman and these recruiters. I guess the grant didn't work out?
Ibra? Don't you fear jumping from the frying pan into the fire?

I missed whatever it was that made you stop posting. But I hope you'll forgive me if I confess that I find the notion of someone complaining about being 'scrutinized' on a message board hilarious. Tell me you're joking, Professor. |

The main issue I have with recruiters is that they seem to have flooded the market with people who would not have been considered at all 20 or so years ago. But is it just that there is now such a massive demand for teachers that they really will take anybody? Sorry for sounding such a snob, but it's hard not to get irritated at the way TEFL has been dumbed-down and made the province of amateurs over the years. Yet, ironically, this has occurred hand-in-hand with teachers pursuing higher and higher levels of formal qualifications.. |

I'd say that it is a combination of supply and demand...
...added to the move to recruiters who get paid whether they hire a qualified person or not.
But yes, when I was in the Gulf, everyone had either an MA or 5+ years of experience or often both.

Back in the early 80s hardly anybody had MAs (as I recall). Even the great global TEFL course book writers like Louis Alexander, Basil Cole and Michael Lord, Robert O'Neil and Bernie Hartley and Peter Viney didn't have them. But they knew their trade and so did most of the people working in the business. I actually think the rot set in when people started to do an MA in large numbers, which was I suppose the mid to late 80s.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not anti education. I just haven't seen an improvement in the quality of learning as instructors became more certificated. - quite the reverse in fact. |

It is likely a combination of many changes... few to the better. Like you, I saw good and bad teachers... with or without an MA.
It seems that the classes are larger, the students arrive even less skilled in languages and study habits. The students are less willing to work, but expect higher grades. Texts are no better... perhaps even worse. New fads in teaching don't deliver any better than the old traditional methods of the early 80s. Too much technology and not enough real language usage? Who knows... glad to be retired though.
But we have hijacked the Good Professor's thread... so back to the topic of
Ibra

Great post.
And, yes...sorry, Professor, for hijacking your Ibra thread. |

NO problem hijack as you please, I was hoping to get a response from someone actually in Oman esp. in Ibra but it looks like they are not on here either.
I received 5 personal emails from some who were in Ibra with general info but still not current.
My grant went very well and I may do a follow up in 2013.
Ibra is not a hire through recruiters which is why I am interested. Nix nix on recruiters.
I'm hearing from former colleagues who (extremely well qualified teachers) believed their recruiters to be exceptional at the beginning of the year are now stating how they are being financially ripped off.
All the professors being ripped off need to find the route to send in complaints to the MOE. No one knows who to complain to so they don't .
One of these professors has previously taught 10 years in Saudi and says he never had to deal with the tricky little things that the Oman recruiters are pulling off on him. |

This recruiter isn't by any chance ELS? I was in Ibra last year and ELS was doing a fine job of running the university's GFP into the ground, and screwing over all the teachers financially. |

hello
i live in ibra with my dog I have a pretty big yard too. I am not really looking for a roommate though.
But I can tell you that I have 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms and a living room. I pay 150 rials. I have no idea what people are saying about ibra, but i find it enjoyable. I guess if you need to be boozed up all the time and cant find pleasure in nature, than you wont like it here.
I bet that if you look around ibra you will be able to find a house with a yard for under 150. |

Hi Omaneditor, thanks for this info. I went ahead and accepted an offer in Ibra, of course it had to be followed by anotheroffer at an old college that I worked at but I said yes to ibra. I'm excited to come there and explore.
I am happy to hear someone else is there with their dog. My dog has done well in all situations as long as he gets to go for his walks and have some chicken once in a while.
It would be so nice to have a yard as last time in Oman we were up 3 floors, 5 flights of stairs and were not allowed to get our own place by the recruiter's rules for the 1st year.
I'll send you a PM with more questions! please be sure and check your messg. thanks again for the info
