It's almost mandatory to have a chip card when traveling in Europe, do I need one for Japan or can I get by with just magnetic strip cards?

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, here's an example of a chip card: http://www9.chasecreditcards.com/ba/100/?CELL=6H8X&AFFID=ae..qCAwTik-dGe4.8vDP65OSfFAZwzl6Q&pvid=ChaseBA100k

Not necessary, but usable. I have both types, as my Japanese bank uses a computer chip, but my American banks only use magnetic strips.

Both my Japanese and NZ credit cards only have magnetic strips. Have never had trouble using either here.
