Just done a quick search here and can't find a specific answer to my question.

I'm investigating full time courses at universities in Spain (Madrid, Barcelona) which means I'd qualify for a student visa. I read on other posts here that it's possible to work part-time but is there a limit on the number of hours I'd be permitted to teach and not breach the student visa regulations?

Some EU countries allow students to work up to 16 hours per week and I found one post here quoted 18 hours maximum per week.

Thank you for any help you can offer to clarify the requirements in Spain.

You can work up to 20 hours per week on a student visa IF you can find an employer willing to jump through the bureaucratic hoops necessary to get you permission to do so (you can't just show up and sign a contract like an EU citizen or someone with a work permit could).

If your plan is to earn money on the side of your studies teaching English, the question is still why would either of you bother? You as a native can almost always make much better money per hour teaching private classes and the academy can probably find someone else in less time than it would take to jump through the hoops to hire you legally.

^ Thanks for the web link Grimace420. I'll check it out. It might be easier for me just to study. My wife is actually Spanish but has lived outside the country for +10 years. Maybe it's better if she worked and I dedicated myself to my studies!

I can tell you my personal situation with the student visa. Here are all of the jobs that I have done on it and nothing has been said to me:

English Language Assistant (Bilingual Comunidad Program)- 16 hours
English Language Assistant (UCETAM Program)- 25 hours
English Language Assistant (BEDA Program)- 16 hours
Teacher Training CRIF "Las Acacias" - 10 hours
Rey Juan Carlos Univesrity - 4 hours
CESIF (Private University) - 9 hours
Teacher Training CTIF Capital - 3 hours
English Teaching for an academy - 1 hour
Teacher Training for Macmillan - 2.5 hours
Hot English Magazine - 16 hours
Dayton Publishing - Various hours
EDELVIVES Publishing - Various hours

These are weekly hours and I have had some of these jobs at the same time. The student visa has opened up doors for me to do a lot of things in Spain. The law has changed as well because people on a student visa must now have a Social Security number in Spain. I've had mine since 2007.

I know of other people doing extra hours on a student visa and academies just take out the 15% and report it to Hacienda so that the people working for them can file taxes.

billy_ruffian, if your spouse is Spanish, you shouldn't need a student visa.
