Who is responsible for visa costs? Am I right in thinking that the employer covers their side and the teacher covers their own costs e.g. certification of documents, courier costs for documents to be sent to employer?
Would be good to hear from those of you who have gone through the process in Oman.
Thank you. |

You are correct. All visas costs should be paid by the employer. (first hint of a scam is they require that you wire money somewhere for the visa... that you will never receive) Certification of your documents is your responsibility.
This would be correct for all the Gulf. (Saudi has some variations on this theme as they also require extensive medical testing before arrival and the best employers reimburse)

Thanks VS.
So I shouldn't expect any reimbursement for courier costs for sending the documents overseas? The employer says no, but I'm just wondering what the norm is... |

I never couriered them... hand carried them with me both times to Oman and gave them in on arrival.
But I would be VERY surprised if any employer reimbursed that...

That's interesting. I'm told the documents need to be sent over to Oman so the visa can be processed...

Good to know, despite the cost involved. Just want to make sure I'm not being taken for a ride! |

This could be a new rule that has been put in place because the recruiters that they have started using seem to hire too many teachers with few or no legitimate credentials.

What group is this telling you to send documents ahead of time? I don't know of any recruiters that have asked that of anyone.
I arrive with only w/my passport and they take care of everything else.
I do not bring my original degrees as they are online verifiable through the university and the MOE also had me email my scanned transcripts to them one time a few years back. I don't think they do that now.
I do bring copies that are notarized of my degrees just in case someone wants to look at them.
NO one has ever requested that I bring any documents except my p.p. and once there I do not leave my pp with anyone. I tell them when they are ready to take it to the labor board I will go with them on that day.
It means I sit there and wait an hour but it gives me peace of mind to know that no one is copying it, losing it or whatever else unthinkable thing they could do with my PP. They can do the pp at the labor dept the same day that they get your blood drawn. Some recruiters will try to bully you into turning over your PP. just refuse. They don't want to send you home at this point and you cannot chance losing that PP. It's a fair request on your part.

Ah, that makes sense (although I'm - thankfully - not going through a recruiter). |
